Sarento's Season Opener Results
January 13, 2007
OK – Where did everyone come from???? With a record number of racers (almost 150 boats and over 170 participants) this was by far our largest race ever. Thanks to Sharon, Ricky and all of the past board members and officers who have worked so hard to grow this sport. Thanks too to Blair Thorndike for the extra publicity in the Maui Bulletin. You all did so well, it overwhelmed our new crew and registration system.
The day started with light winds, beautiful sunshine and Baldwin hosting the first MIL preseason race at Ka Lae Pohaku Beach. Thanks go to the MIL folks for working with MCKC to get the races off to a great start. It also gave the MCKC folks a chance to watch the upcoming paddlers as they did a mile plus triangle sprints in preparation for their own season.
While the water was less than cooperative – with winds from the southwest and stagnant water – there were many hard fought battles between paddlers as the race progressed toward Sarento’s. A new division that has taken off is the stand-up paddlers with almost 10 participants. This is exciting to see because it lends a new element to the paddling/surfing/paddleboard groups. After about an hour (depending on where you finished), the paddlers arrived to Tahitian drumming at Sarento’s on Keawakapu Beach. Thanks to those paddlers that listened to the race briefing and finished inside of the buoy – while our finish line crew is amazing, they don’t have x-ray vision yet. We are working on it!!
Once again, thanks go out to our awesome water officials (Cary, Jeff and Mary) who make the entire race possible. We even made them work for their money today as they did have to assist a couple of people with technical difficulties. (As an aside – it is distracting to the paddlers to try and chase Mary around because she got an Ulua right before the race and we all wanted sashimi.) We also want to thank our officials (Gail as a non-paddler and many year supporter, Joey and Katrina, as our new crew and trophy girls), who helped for over 5.5 hours to get you registered and recorded at the finish. They get no medals and no awards but volunteer their time and work their butts off, with smiles on their faces – give them a big MAHALO next time you see them!!
Our season opener has been hosted by Aaron Placourakis for the past couple of years and he didn’t let us down this year! The food at Sarento’s was amazing and the staff was more than helpful in making sure we were well fed and primed with good libations. We were even treated to live entertainment with music and some impromptu hula performed by several paddlers and officials. Manoli (Aaron’s mini-me) provided some good laughs while we tried to iron out the race results.
Due to the high volume of new paddlers, there is no way we can continue to do the results in a non-automated format. What this means to you is a few growing pains. We apologize for not being able to immediately distribute medals at the race but will do so at the next race. As officials, we learned some valuable lessons – make sure everyone fills out all of the forms; make sure all paddlers put the correct number on their boat; make sure the numbers are clearly visible; and remind everyone to finish inside of the buoy. With the new system, the boat number is like a social security number and cannot be changed race to race so we ask for your assistance in making sure you have the correct number on the boat you race.
Mostly, we appreciate your patience and willingness to participate in this rapidly growing sport with smiles on your faces, goodwill toward your fellow paddlers and tolerance as the new folks learn new roles. We look forward to the next race on January 27, 2007 hosted by Leilani’s Island Steak House (Buff) and Tri-Paddle (Wendell) and can’t wait to see all of you there.
If you want to save time at the next race, be sure to pre-print your forms off of the website and check for race schedule changes there. Until next time, happy paddling…

Maui, right on, looks like you guys had a fun race, and looks like you guys have people in charge who care about the sport, not like Kauai??? Poor organization, makes me not want to show up to races, especially when I see your guys set-up & and alll the fun you guys have after races. Big Mahalo to all your volunteers, keep up the good work maui, maybe I'll move there some day...

Maui does have awesome people in charge who care a lot about the sport-- i've only done one race over there, and it was great----
not like Kaua'i though? Are you sure about that? I've never run a race or an association, so i honestly have no idea how much work it takes to pull it off succesfully... But, from what i hear, it is more work than all of us who don't organize can imagine.
Kaua'i races cost $15... and you get food (almost always), prizes at the end of the season, sometimes a good raffle, accurate results-----------
I'm not even sure if $15 covers the cost of insurance for the race.
The people throwing the races are all volunteers-- they don't get anything out of it... they do it because they like to race.
Anyways-- i was just a little shocked at seeing your post because it is far from accurate.

MCKC does it's best to keep costs low and provide fun, safe, yet challenging events. MCKC has had a change of command this year and the new team is doing its best to maintain the great environment established by Ricky and Sharon Balidoy (Sharicky, as they are known to us, stepped down this year; much to everyone's chagrin... now I know why).
We did a lot of things right at the first race of the season, but we messed up the results. We have so many paddlers participating now (30% growth this year alone) that we just can't do the results manually anymore, so we tested out some new race software. Anytime you experience explosive growth like we have, some growing pains come with it. Our software didn't work as well as anticipated, primarily due to lack of bodies on the beach at the finish to catch boat numbers as they crossed the finish line, and some data entry issues in the database. We apologize to anyone who's results were not accurately recorded. The problem is, if we can't catch the numbers as they cross the line, it doesn't matter what system is used, the results will not be accurate. Any paddlers unable to paddle for whatever reason are welcome to volunteer to help at the finish. Since paddlers know most of the other paddlers by sight (or stroke), they can make the results tabulation process much smoother.
We are working diligenty to work out the "bugs" in our process and anticipate a much cleaner/accurate results posting process at Leilani's Triangle on January 27th. As bad as the results were, that was the only area that was a major problem. Everything else was handled properly and the event was great and everyone had a fantastic time! We had the permits, the insurance, the season jerseys, the sponsors lined up, the event shirts, the registration forms, the clipboards and pens, a new logo, advertising, appropriate petty cash, sufficient registration help, the starting horn, the bouys, timers, the radios to communicate, the water officials, the payment options, the food and beverage, the entertainment, the medals, almost everything. Almost. And what we messed up this time will be fixed the next time.
For those who do not know what it takes to coordinate an event like this, all you need to do is volunteer for one race and your appreciation level will skyrocket. When the event is over, your volunteers still have to put in many hours dealing with insurance company reports, waiver submissions, payments to officials and vendors, updating websites, and thanking/building relationships with sponsors. Your volunteers are human and are not perfect. It's no easy task and without them you don't race, so please smile at your volunteers, appreciate their efforts, and have patience with their mistakes.
Hope to see you at Leilani's on the Beach in Ka'anapali on January 27th for our next amazing race in the series.
Aloha!

Things can always be better-- but i really think that we (or you... since i'm not really there) have it pretty good on Kaua'i.. I was really dissapointed for the first race when there was no food or anything afterwards-- but that got worked out by the second one yeah? There are 8 Kaua'i races this year--- and they cover every downwind run on the island and they are $15 apiece... from a pure racing perspective, that's pretty unbeatable.. and i'm fine if every once in-awhile there isn't any lunch afterwards because of a miscommunication or whatever was the reason...
I'm all for giving opinions-- i was just disagreeing with you.. i guess i should have said "I think that is far from accurate" instead of "that is far from accurate".... my bad. Anyway-- other than no lunch at the last race, i've never had a bad experience at any Kaua'i race, so, from my perspective, i didn't (and don't) see where you're coming from.

Not organized meaning, they did not submit a race schedule to the Port. Allen boat club untill later, that's why the end part was changed form the usual spot which ends at the boat club. Lots of parking in there, water to rinse, tables to sit on etc... You've been there. They expected the boat club would be ok with the late notice, but they have other people who reserve the club for parties, etc... And I don't think the organization donates any time or money back to the club. I know they have harbour clean & maintance days and only 1 or 2 people show up for the clean up. And then they turn around and talk crap about the guys who run the boat club, and In turn the boat club guys talk bad about paddlers (in general). Not sure what I am talking about, but that's were I was coming from.

MCKC is fortunate in that we have generous sponsors who provide food and beverages, prizes, awards and a great atmosphere after each of our races. We love our sponsors!!
Insurance is the killer expense. For "event only" participation, we charge $20/race, of which $10 goes to insurance. The other $10 helps offset expenses such as water officials, porta-potties, tools and equipment, numbers for boats, race jerseys, etc. If we did not have the sponsorship support we have on Maui, there would not be any F&B after the races, or medals, or prizes.
I did the math and if we had to pay for everything out of pocket each race, it would total $107/paddler per race with an average of 120 paddlers per race. Not a bad value for $20.
Please support our sponsors and let them know how much it means to you that they support paddling events. It's the only way to demonstrate value to our sponsors and encourage them to continue sponsorship of our events. That, in turn, is the only way we are able to keep the entry fees affordable.
Check out our sponsors at www.mauicanoeandkayak.org

The MCKC is a result of paddlers who care about the sport and the desire to do things right. The commitments made by all who have been and who currently are in charge of this organization want the best for the paddling community of Maui. Last year I enjoyed two races and hope to do as many as possible this year. I am really pleased with the organization and camaraderie of the officers and paddlers alike. Showing up at the beach this past weekend(1/13) and seeing all the boats, people, cars and paddlers and the ease that it was handled(appeared really smooth) makes me feel grateful for the past and present volunteers of the MCKC. Keep up the great work. Maui and MCKC are truly No Ka Oi!
There will probably be more paddlers at the next race in Lahaina!!!
