It was perfect weather for a suntan, great conditions for a workout, and we had super participation in our first race of the 2002/2003 YMCA/Kaua?i Hoe Wa?a season. A total of forty five canoes entered the short and long courses. Twenty one in the short course of approximately 4.5 miles, and twenty four in the long run up to Hanamaulu and back for about 8 miles.

Hipo Princena was the first paddler across the finish for the long course in a time of 1:07:11, followed closely by Luke Evslin in 1:08:09 and Butch Keahiolalo in 1:08:14. The first woman finisher in the long course was Laurie Denton in 1:18:49 with Robin Jumper only seconds behind in 1:19:11. In third place was Laura Anderson of Hanalei in 1:22:31.

Out on the short course, our young paddlers showed us how it was done with Thomas Oliver crossing first in 44:18 and Keizo Gates second in 45:56. Jan TenBruggencate was third in 46:15. In the women?s division it was Kimberlee Stuart of Hanalei first in 52:24, Frankie Hudson second in 54:38, followed closely by Patrice Asuncion in 55:13.

It was great to see everyone out there, especially in the junior division! One of our competitors is 13 years old and already proving to be someone to watch out for in the years to come!

Mika Cajucom, visiting from Sacramento California, said it best ?today was perfect ? the most incredible scenery and conditions. So much better than paddling in the cold rivers at home. Can?t wait to get back!?

A great lunch, provided by Duke?s, was enjoyed by all. Donations of $450 were collected from the paddlers for the Kaua?i Foodbank.

The long course will be from the Sheraton Poipu to Port Allen (approximately 8.5 miles), and the short course will be from Kukuiula Harbor to Port Allen (approximately 6 miles). Another great lunch will follow. We want to see all OC-1 and OC-2 paddlers out there!
