Mar 14 - Victory at sea for Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a Paddlers

[Photos] by Makana Denton
Recap by Kimberlee Stuart

In a word, "Epic" is probably the best way to describe the conditions and performances in the Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a race this weekend. Blustery wind and wave predictions made for a last-minute course change from the north shore to a Kalapaki to Poipu and Port Allen run. Paddlers braved wild seas for what many will call the best run of the year. Many enjoyed three and four-wave ride connections with fierce wind gusts on their backs helping the down-wind push.

Noe Sawyer has established herself as Kauai's top OC1 women paddler in her show of three races, three wins. Laurie Denton was close behind on her surfski and Margie Goodno and Laura Anderson placed second and third respectively. The top three contenders for the Men's division were, once again, David Beck in first with Steve Cole and Hipo Princena placing second and third. The short course was won by a season's newcomer Togo Hermosura and Nancy Greff won for the women's short course.

The Hanalei Dolphin and Kai Kane's sponsored the YMCA & Steinlager Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a Race and paddlers were treated to goodies from these sponsors during the after-race festivities. Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a looks foward to both state and world-wide competition as the Kaua'i World Challenge looms closer. The event is pegged for May 8th and registration can be accomplished through the website posted here.

We would like to acknowledge and thank those paddlers on the long course who stopped to assist, and/or standby to
assist a paddler who's canoe came apart. Safety is always our first concern, especially in conditions such as today.
By stopping, these paddlers lost their true placement in the race finishes: Mick Callahan, Kimberlee Stuart,
Jacques Amo, and Mary Bartlett.
We had two paddlers who experienced equipment breakdowns on the long course and Warwick Gray, our escort
boat driver, did a phenomenal job getting these paddlers up and running again! Mick Callahan stopped to
aasist with both incidents.
