Mar 28 - Kapaa-Kalapaki Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a Race 7

What a great day out on the water for our seventh race of this season sponsored by Duke’s Canoe Club Barefoot Bar and Restaurant! Duke’s treated the paddlers to an excellent lunch and some great prizes at the end of the race, and the view of Kalapaki Bay from their upper deck was sensational! They have been such a great supporter of Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a since its inception three years ago, and it’s because of them, and our other wonderful sponsors, that this sport is growing so rapidly.
Yesterday the Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a Association was actually able to hold this race on the scheduled course. The wind out of the northeast was coming in around 10 to 20 knots, and provided everyone with a fun run from Kapaa/Wailua to Kalapaki Bay. Two paddlers were awed by an up close encounter with a mother whale and her calf crossing in front of them around the Radisson Kaua‘i Beach. Maybe a little too close, but awesome. David Beck, in his usual top form, blazed the long course in 1:15:33 with Steve Cole coming in almost four minutes back in 1:19:12. Butch Keahiolalo was third in 1:21:22. For the women, Noe Sawyer took top honors again with a strong finish in 1:30:03 followed by Katy Curtis in 1:32:59. The race of the day was between Mary Bartlett and Katie Otsuji who kept trading places along the course. The race was determined in the last few seconds as they battled neck-n-neck to the finish line with Mary coming in third in 1:45:13 and Katy 1:45:17. These two were the same paddlers who encountered the whales along the course – what a day! The surfski division is growing, and we had four entered in the long course – two men and two women. Wes da Silva took first in 1:22:32 followed by Ken Denton in 1:25:30. Darcy Gray wasn’t too far behind Ken coming in at 1:25:50, and Laurie Denton is becoming quite an accomplished surfski paddler finishing in a very respectable time of 1:31:48
Marshall MacCready was the only surfski on the short course, and finished first surfing the Wailua to Kalapaki stretch in 1:12:45. Richard Pettigrew led the way for the OC-1s coming in at 1:13:32, followed by Tom Bartlett in 1:18:44, and Basil Scott in 1:19:02. In the women’s division it was Midge Horwood in first at 1:24:45 with Laola Aea and Joy Chow following in 1:25:01 and 1:30:19 respectively.
Our eighth race of the season will be on Sunday, April 4th and sponsored by Kai Kane. Conditions permitting, this race will be held on the north shore with the long course leaving Kalihiwai Bay for Haena, and the short course from Hanalei Bay to Haena. The Starbuck’s Kaua‘i Island Championship race will be on Sunday, April 18th with the long course starting at Kalapaki Bay and ending at Port Allen. The short course will be Poipu to Port Allen.
The season finale will be the second annual $20,000 Steinlager/PAHIO Resorts Kaua‘i World Challenge relay on May 8th. This will be another fantastic event attracting paddlers from all over the globe. This year there will be representation in the surfski division with acclaimed international paddlers Dean Gardiner, Oscar Chalupsky, Marshall Rosa, Mark Sandvold, and more. The OC-1 and OC-2 divisions will have more teams coming from Australia, New Zealand, Rarotonga, Brazil, California, and our neighbor islands, along with returning winners from last year. For more information on this race or Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a, call Tom or Mary Bartlett at 826-5503 or e-mail places@hawaiian.net. Super air/room/car packages are being offered for the World Challenge.
