Apr 18 - 68 Paddlers Come Out For Kaua`i Island Championship

It was a great finale to a great season of OC-1, OC-2, and Surfski racing as sixty eight paddlers turned out for our Kauaâi Island Championship race Sunday, April 18th! Starbucks Coffee was our sponsor for this event and they went above and beyond in providing everyone an ono lunch, great prizes, and beautiful trophies for the winners! Our other sponsors were Quiksilver who also provided some fun prizes for the paddlers (making it possible for almost everyone going home with a âgoodieâ), Steinlager, and the YMCA of Kauaâi. This is the third year Kauaâi Hoe Waâa has been in existence, and the YMCA of Kauaâi has been a great support helping us to grow this sport on our island.
You couldnât ask for better race conditions as yesterday provided good wind and some great bumps. It was, using Jackie Carswellâs term for it, a âsleigh rideâ! David Beck, who paddled in the State Championship on Oahu on Saturday placing 5th overall, came home to paddle in our last race of the season placing 1st in a time of 2:27:18. David is also the menâs seasonâs points winner for 2004. Steve Cole and Butch Keahiolalo also paddled Saturday in the Stateâs, and were still in top form yesterday coming in at 2:27:19 and 2:27:20. Noe Auger dominated the womenâs division finishing in an impressive 2:47:16. She also took top honors with the womenâs seasonâs points for this year. Katy Curtis came in second in 2:53:55 followed by Margie Goodno in 2:55:33. Katy and Margie are gearing up for the Molokai relay race on May 2nd, and will be a very competitive womenâs team to contend with. We had two surfskis in the long course, and this is a division we hope will keep growing. Wes da Silva came in 10th overall with a time of 2:42:12 and Laurie Denton, who just keeps getting better at it, came in at 2:58:43.
There was quite a field in the short course, and Bret Deblin took top honors coming in at 1:12:04. Gaylord Wilcox, who came over from Oahu, came in second. Gaylord is just amazing as he is in the 60+ age group, but came in second in the open division with a time of 1:12:13. Steve Baker wasnât too far behind in 1:12:41. In the womenâs division it was Cindy Grover who paddled very well to a first place finish in 1:27:30. Laola Aea and Kimberlee Stuart stayed the course and finished in a very close race with times of 1:29:53 and 1:30:04. We had one surfski in the short course paddled by Darcy Gray (Gaylordâs daughter) who had a race going with the first three OC-1s. She came in first overall with a time of 1:12:02.
The second annual $20,000 Steinlager/PAHIO Resorts Kauaâi World Challenge relay will be on May 8th. This will be quite a spectacular event with paddlers coming from around the globe. Those who participated last year can attest to the fact that this race is one not to be missed. If you havenât submitted your registration, please do so as soon as possible. The cut off is April 30th. For more information on this race, call Tom or Mary Bartlett at 826-5503 or e-mail places@hawaiian.net. (or See website here)
