What makes you not fast?

Ok there are about 14 kagillion post on what makes you faster in your boat. But what about what makes you slower?

I'll start by saying sitting here on my ass posting on ocpaddler definitely makes me slower...

I hold my blade with my top hand which I can paddle really high rate but I can't seem to go more than 2mph. Can someone help me?!

dude if you can go 2 miles an hour holding your paddle upside down, thats pretty fricken fast.

I believe you need to turn the T-top sideways when it enters the water to increase your speed. The "T" needs to be perpendicular to the hull when it enters the water. For maximum slowness, turn "T" parallel to the hull of ypur canoe.this is the path of least resistance. the other popular method of slowness is air paddling. This is real similar to "air guitar". This is a great opportunity to do your best Jr. or Kai moves!

I suck at outrigger so whatever I do sucks. After 7 months my fastest 2.5 mile lap on flat with a little headwind is 26:45...most of my laps are like 28 minutes. I think my weight, 260, my lack of balance are most of it...not doing any sprint training maybe...seeing as my boat (fusion) got an F for flatwater I doubt that helps either. I can paddle 16 miles but I cant go fast.

To my surprise I am pretty good on a standup board....I think I might be able to paddle a standup almost as fast as the outrigger...suck ass OC speed = decent stand up speed.. and with that I am on the radar screen for actually competing in a race around here. No idea why

For maximum slowness, I try to drag as much kelp and seagrass as possible. Additionally, I like to eat several spoons of sugar on an empty stomach before long pieces. I find my slowness increases as my blood sugar plummets later on.

I also only do uphill runs.

e02060 aquafiend sells a kelp cutting rudder for $2500, in case you're interested.

Shawn, try using your legs in you oc-1.

Not fast techniques

-3-egg omelete 1 hour before racing

-piss off everyone in my crew

-constantly look back at steersman and give him the "WTF" look

-ask stroker what planet he is on.

I only drag kelp during a race, that way not only does it slow me down, but it tires me out as I'm not used to the resistance.
Kona, yeah hassling the steersman is good. Of course if you're in 5 you might accidently get wacked in the head.

OC1 : Worring about what excuse you have to tell after the race that you havenÿt used yet

OC6: Worring about everyone else in the crew and not yourself. Thinking it is them, but actually it is you thatÿs stinkn it up.

Ehayward thats frickin awesome. Youre right, you gotta ask yourself what the common denominator is in all the bad crews you've been in.

Jibofo, you know if you drag kelp the whole race you have a great excuse:"I woulda won if it wasn't for that 2 mile long piece of kelp I had on my rudder, sheesh I should have paid aquafiend that $4000 for the rudder."

other things that make you slow: rigging ama on backwards, drinking the night before a 26 mile race, not knowing where to go in a race, having bad diarhea.

water changes on an OC 1 when you are alone

#11 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 3:05pm

Not having an OC 1 makes me really slow. Almost like I'm not going anywhere at all.

Must remedy soon...

paddling with faster people makes me slow

#13 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 3:25pm

Its just a gift that I was born with.

If every race had a 5 huli minimum, I might not do so bad.

Paddling with all my Cam equipment slows me down, especially the one i mounted under the hull last week to capture any big fish that might past by.

Ah, the "shark cam".

#16 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 5:52pm

paddling with dacho and painteur make me slow

#18 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 7:53pm

Holes in my canoe. I'm still debating the weight advantage of removing material with a holesaw from the hull of my boat.

#19 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 7:58pm

What makes me go slow? Trying to go fast usually causes me to tense up, therefore, I go slow.

#20 Tue, 09/23/2008 - 9:49pm

You mean this one Dacho

"e02060 aquafiend sells a kelp cutting rudder for $2500, in case you’re interested"

Poops I told you, if youre gonna pimp my product you gotta double the price for your cut. Just dont tell them you get half the $5000. Go boy go.....sell sell sell!!!!

#24 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 6:30am

aqua, is there a way to sell kelp cutting devices to rudderless paddlers in Tahiti ? I'd like to make money too !

#25 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 8:45am

Hui, forgetting to put my seat on makes me slow...one sore okole, too...

#27 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 9:10am

hiro,

probably the biggest loss when going from oc1 to v1 is not being able to blame the kelp or seagrass on the rudder as excuse.

#28 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 12:32pm

hey guys. Im back.

What makes me slow, CHEESE BURGERS AND CHIPS

#29 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 12:56pm

Hey mulus
long time. We met at that race in Deep Cove this July.
I think those honey soaked donuts in Deep Cove are worse than burgers and fries for boat speed.
welcome back

My thought on constantly looking back and driving steersman crazy could be a whole new thread called-"When steersman loose their minds....' Stories of when steersman go absolutely over the top angry or crazy.

One of my favorite is I had a steersman who was an x-semi pro-surfer and loved to cut it close outside of Diamond Head. After every practice crew would say we are going to get crushed one day. He says no worries I have surfed that break for 14 years I know everypart of it. Well 6-8 foot day and we are sliding around cornero f Diamond Head and pounding away and the we hear from the back "Oh Fuc@#" We look left and it is over-16 feet of face looking to kick our ass. Lost two paddles, seat 1 ended up in seat 3's lap. 5 stiches and steersman says. "That wave shouldn't have been there." What? On the other hand steering is super hard and I couldn't do it. But it was fun story.

I would love to hear more stories of "When steersman loose their minds...."

Paddling a canoe without chines will make anyone slow!

#32 Wed, 09/24/2008 - 1:54pm

I was waiting for someone to say that about chines!

Kona J, you should start that thread. I'd do it but I want you to have the credit. I'm sure there are some psycho stories out there....
