Molokai Hoe race day channel updates

Ok gang, update number one - the winds are 10-20, nice swells, partly cloudy.

The race just started about 5 minutes ago..WHY SO LATE YOU ASK? There was a false start !!!!!! YES, the officals made everyone turn around and go back to the starting line. I am not sure who false started at this point but some canoes were about a 1/4 mile into it. Alex is in the helo filming, and we have 2 media boats running with Dolan and Hugh filming, they will have on film who did what. At this point I don't want to give you false (please dont mind the pun) information. So for now.."someone" false started is all I can say for sure! You can imagine what that must have been like for the crews. Hearts racing, paddles hitting...then to be told "hey turn around and lets do this again"..Needless to say WOW.

It's only 5 minutes into it, but shell is in the front, followed by Lanikai.

I will try to update you every hour..Reception gets weird but I will do my best and will try to give you the top 5 boats.

AWESOME SO FAR and super exciting..The weather is perfect for a good race. There are trades, we expect them to pick up a little as the day goes on. WOW..UNREAL. I am sure when they get into the channel it is going to be a blast. The winds have been blowing 10-20 for a few days. Some of the escort guys told me they got the crap beaten out of them on their way to Molokai to escort. I will have more information at 9:00am...You guys do know I am not a writer, so dont tease me..I dont even have spell check right now.

THE RACE IS ON BABY:):)

#3 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 9:06am

9:00am update:

Here is the line up roughly 1 hour into the race.

Shell is in first
Lanikai is about 1/8th of a mile behind them grouped closely by
OPT in 3rd
Venus Vaa in 4th
and the Hawaiian crew Paa in 5th.

I am told the crews have settled down and it is game on.

More in an hour.
Terry

#4 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 9:20am

The standings are still the same 1/2 way thru the race already..15.9 miles off diamond head. Shell is pretty much taking a straight line from point A to B. OPT is the only crew in the top 5 taking a more southern route. The rest are more north.

The top 5 crew have a huge gap on the rest of the pack.

1 - Shell
2 - Lanikai
3 - OPT
4 - Venus
5 - Pa'a

It is still a race with none of the top 5 in a clear balls out lead!!

Winds are blowing 10-20 with seas at 4-8ft..

Other then the false start, nothing to report out of the norm. So far a good clean race.

#5 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:12am

go Tahiti, go shell

#6 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:12am

Mahalo, Terry! Awesome work!!

#7 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:14am

HI I am in New Zealand wondering how my husband and his team are going - Team Te Awa Haku - any news on them?
Thanks - wish I was there

#8 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:16am

mahalo Terry for the updates.I am originally from Tahiti, and find it amazing that there is nothing on the radio or TV about this, only football!

#9 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:24am

Wish I was there too !

#10 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:25am

So time wise, any predictions yet? New record?

#11 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:26am

Ahh Sharyn, I don't even know where my husband is right now!!! We (ocean paddler TV) have guys filming and I am communicating with them and a few of the escort boat drivers in the front. I just did this because of the interest in having a live show. We couldnt do that, we thought maybe we could give updates on the top canoes this way. I am sorry I wish I could give information on where all 100 canoes were!

I can tell you everyone is safe and are having fun:)

We in Hawaii wish you were here as well..

Terry

#12 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:29am

RFO radio said Shell is close to 80 strokes / min...

#13 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:32am

Thanks - I understand you can't keep track of all teams - just thought on the off chance that you might have come across them during the morning - thanks for the updates and really enjoying the feed back!!!

#14 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:34am

It does suck there are no radio and TV live reports, BUT hey, atleast ocean paddler TV can do this for you. This is why we have to get more money from companies and such to be able to afford to do more..Anyone want to advertsie on Ocean paddler TV? Our rates are really good, and look at the extra stuff you get.

Alex will make a mean show from the footage. Ocean paddler TV has the best guys, Dolan and Hugh, Alex filming. Alex is in the air and will be calling me soon with more information. Maybe he can tell me more about the rest of the crews.

I can tell you next year we will be in a better $$$$ to do more.

Jibofo - They are on track for a record...

#15 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:50am

Sharyn, Do you know their hull number? Maybe I could get something on them from Alex who is in the air.

In Tahiti, RFO Radio is broadcasting a live report every 15 minutes. They have rented a boat and their reporter is calling every 15 minutes with his cellphone.
Only problem, I have to listen shitty music in between reports !

#17 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:40am

good job oc padller tv .. keep it up

#18 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:40am

Hiro, they arent stroking that fast!!! Not in these conditions.
Keola said they look strong, they took a bee line from point A to B. The tide is rising and the closer all the crews get to Diamond head it is going to start stacking up. I think that is when it will start to get really interesting.

Any questions you all want me to ask about specifics?
xoxo
Terry

#19 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:41am

Shell Va'a first. Near Koko head.
Lanikai and Venus 3 km behind, fighting for 2nd place.
Team OPT and E Ra'i took a straight route to Diamond Head. They are 4 and 5 but could be reaching Diamond Head before Venus and Lanikai...

#20 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:44am

I'm not there Terry, I just give you what they report on the radio...
Maybe they exagerate a little !

#21 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:49am

I know a complete break down of standings are not realistic, but could you give a top 10 or 15?

Thanks Terry!!

#22 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:45am

Thank you for your help but I don't know their Hull number. Appreciate your offer but I know you guys are busy enough!!! I really am enjoying the coverage - keep up the good work!!

#23 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:46am

Lanikai is fighting for the second place with venus vaa.

#24 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:46am

Mahalo Terry for the updates!

What Lanikai crew leading? Jr's?

How far from Koko Head?

#25 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:46am

anyone know how the seattle/keizo crew is faring?

i just checked, still nothing on TV yet.

#26 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:47am

Terry, what time do you think the winners will be at the finish line?

#27 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:49am

This is so very cool; many, many thanks to you, Terry

#28 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 10:54am

No worries Hiro, What I am telling you is coming directly from our guys. They have no reason to make things seem bigger then they are!

The standings and where they are is 100% on the money!
We have 2 media boats out there and Alex is in the helo right above them:):)

How fun is this? I am sitting in my office on a sunny day on my computer. You know I must adore you all to be doing this!

#32 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:04am

eckhart, that's the one. Find the "Polynésie" radio channel. I don't know if you can liste to it live online. If you can, learn french and/or tahitian... ;-)

#33 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:04am

Terry, If I had an helo over the cannel today, I would find someone else to stay in the office next to the computer !

#34 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:06am

someone needs to learn how to use twitter from a mobile phone!!!

#35 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:06am

Maururu roa (Many thanks) Terry! Great work!

Seems as if the race will remain thrilling till the very end.

By chance, did you hear or see anything about the Zebra Boat (that includes some US, Hungarian and German paddlers)?

Many thanks again for all your efforts to keep us all posted!

Mahalo and greetings from Germany!

#36 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:08am

Ok here we go:

Shell has about a 1/2 mile lead on Lanikai (1st crew) and Venus

2- Lanikai
3 - Venus Vaa

They are side by side pretty much battling. Lanikai and Venus are 9 miles off diamond head.

OPT is south of lanikai and venus..A clear line up on the standings is super close from 2nd down to 4th-5th place.

The race will be over in another hour, hour and half for the winners.

ooohhh..This aint over yet..Lanikai still has plenty of time.
No mishaps or safety problems with any of the rest of the crews.

I just got this report from Keola who is escorting Lanikai. Alex will call me soon with a report from the helo.

#37 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:08am

It's on live - they have the news right now; Hiro - j'ai passe toutes mes vacances a la cote atlantique - L'Aquitaine, Bordeaux.

approaching Koko/Diamond Head:

Shell Va'a 4 - 5 km ahead according to the radio commentator.
Lanikai, Venus Va'a - neck to neck for second
OPT - neck to neck for fourth
no word on Pa'a

back to you Hiro, time to go to the beach.

#38 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:17am

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the good work ...

Please say hello to Dolan from the onnopaddle guy from
MBSC years back ... good to hear he is working with you.
I think he is a good guy. The women use to say he was gods gift to them ..

#39 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:09am

Regarding the zebra crew...Jane will call me, she is on their escort boat..I will let you know as soon as she calls:):)

I hope those guys place in the top 10. We took them out on our sailing canoe last weekend, they are a terrific group.

#40 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:10am

Did he just say 5km lead near Diamond head for Shell?

#41 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:13am

Mahalo for the line up.

#42 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:16am

They're pretty excited about that perpetual trophy, eh? You could hear the passion in his voice. It's just that much more important to them.

#43 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:18am

Hey Terry...Great job. Once the race is over, are you or someone else able to post the results list down as far as you can from the beach. Anticipating the Masters results.

From Australia.

#44 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:20am

Hiro, if you saw how crazy Alex gets in the helo you would want to be in the office with me. He is all about getting the shot and the guy has no fear. I have seen him literally hanging out with his camera. He isnt dangerous but it still scares me to see him when he is in that whirly bird. I have attached a photo from a commerical we shot..

Malachi, twitter? I can barley type on this computer! It is sad that I dont even know what a twitter is? Sounds like a little bird..hahaha.

#45 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:21am

Eckhart, why aren't you out there?

#46 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:21am

#48 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:24am

#57 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 11:34am
