Ok gang, update number one - the winds are 10-20, nice swells, partly cloudy.
The race just started about 5 minutes ago..WHY SO LATE YOU ASK? There was a false start !!!!!! YES, the officals made everyone turn around and go back to the starting line. I am not sure who false started at this point but some canoes were about a 1/4 mile into it. Alex is in the helo filming, and we have 2 media boats running with Dolan and Hugh filming, they will have on film who did what. At this point I don't want to give you false (please dont mind the pun) information. So for now.."someone" false started is all I can say for sure! You can imagine what that must have been like for the crews. Hearts racing, paddles hitting...then to be told "hey turn around and lets do this again"..Needless to say WOW.
It's only 5 minutes into it, but shell is in the front, followed by Lanikai.
I will try to update you every hour..Reception gets weird but I will do my best and will try to give you the top 5 boats.
AWESOME SO FAR and super exciting..The weather is perfect for a good race. There are trades, we expect them to pick up a little as the day goes on. WOW..UNREAL. I am sure when they get into the channel it is going to be a blast. The winds have been blowing 10-20 for a few days. Some of the escort guys told me they got the crap beaten out of them on their way to Molokai to escort. I will have more information at 9:00am...You guys do know I am not a writer, so dont tease me..I dont even have spell check right now.
THE RACE IS ON BABY:):)

#71 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 12:09pm
4 - 5 kms ??? That's about 15 min lead, ... that is a big margin. Could that be right?
#72 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 12:11pm
Actually I hope Lanikai holds onto second - if only just to break up the somewhat boring predictability of a Tahitian dominated race... and besides, a team like Lanikai stands for most of the things I love about paddling in the first instance.
#73 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 12:14pm
Just got a call from jane who is on the escort boat with team zebra..They are in 15th or so place, battling it out with team Califorina. Jane said they got knocked around a bit at the start. They are still outside Diamond head. She said the guys have calmed down a bit and are doing great!
No surf - sorry to have said that, No surf hawaii standards, but there are bumps and guys are having fun.
#74 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 12:15pm

If so... DAMN!! Congratulations!! I can't even imagine have the balls to do that. Huge props to the team - and to Aka.
#123 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 3:53pm

Pure light is Aka's group, they started early and had a jet ski helping them. Pretty cool stuff..

#124 Sun, 10/12/2008 - 5:05pm
Kudos to Terry and Hiro and all the rest who took us across the channel as best as can from our homes. Local news clips here in Hawaii where pitiful coverage this evening. No one has even listed the names of the winning crew I can find so far. Would coverage have been better and more if it had been a Hawaiian crew on top?? Hope Ocean Paddler got some footage and interviews with the winners. Look forward to seeing your show, Terry. Let us know way in advance when it will air please. Good step forward to moving our sport into a spectator sport. Mahalo

There are 13 pictures from the Awards presentation at the end of the race that I've thrown into this site;
http://www.hckt.org/OtherWebs/2008Oct12Pics/
If you're in any of the awards picture, send me an email and I will email you the original. Its in raw format - no compression (CR2) so pictures really large, which was kind of a mistake since they are a little more difficult to work with but if you know how, let me know. Its yours 4 free. Email address on the website.
Give me bout 4 or so days to respond. Kinda bz right now.
Congratulations to you all!
