Butch Keahiolalo upsets Mark Frazier in Kauai Race 4 - Feb 13
[Photos & a video clip from the start] by L., K., & M. Denton
Conditions were a mixed bag of wind directions as the long course competitors needed to go a tough paddle upwind first from Pt. Allen for about a mile to Wahiawa bay where they turned on a buoy. Hoping for downwind conditions following the turn worked according to plan until the expected flat portion for the last third of the race turned into another upwind battle as wind direction reversed. For competitors who paddled last year's Kauai World Challenge it was a bit of a flashback. Though short course paddlers did not have to do deal with the head winds in the beginning they did have their share at the end and every competitor got a good workout.
49 paddlers entered the YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa'a fourth race with over 10 newcomers braving the challenging conditions. In the long course we have a change of roles with Butch Keahialalo finishing first and Mark Frazier taking second. Hipo Princena took 3rd overall.
In the women’s long course Alana Goo maintains her 1st,. place standing. Mavis Aiu came in 2nd and Mary Bartlett 3rd.
Congratulations to Greg Davis for coming in 1st overall in the short course and.... she's baaaack; Robin Jumper took first for the women's short course.
We want to extend a big mahalo to Alan Faye and the Gang down at Waimea Plantation Cottages for hosting the event; great location and outstanding food and prizes! What’s the saying "West is Best" ? Go down and visit those diamonds in the rough!
Also Congratulations to one of our new paddlers David MacDonald who won the Grand Prize and one night stay at Waimea Plantation Cottages.
Other sponsors for this race are our ever-faithful YMCA and Steinlager. We would also like to thank our Volunteers:

Hey, nice story and video but where are the boat designations? I saw surf skis in the video but don't see them listed in the results.
cheers from Victoria, Canada
