The State Sport of Hawai'i

http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090613/BREAKING02/90613044/-...

The Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association today approved proposals to reduce state tournament participation in most sports. The recommendations will go to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board on Tuesday for final approval.

This morning at Ala Moana Hotel, the HIADA general assembly voted to reduce state tournament participation by 20 percent in golf, swimming, wrestling, track and field, cross country, tennis, judo, bowling, paddling and air riflery.

A proposal to limit team state tournaments to 33 percent of the total statewide participation was also approved, likely shrinking Division II baseball, softball and soccer state tournament fields from 12 teams each to eight.

Division I baseball, basketball and volleyball state tournaments likely would remain at 12 teams under the formula.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association, citing effects from the Department of Education's mandated 50 percent budget cut for athletic supplies, equipment and transportation, submitted most of the proposals related to reduced state tournament participation.

I really don't understand how someone can come on OCpaddler, just to post how worthless the site is, or how the regular contributors are "boring," and have "nothing to contribute but vitriol." Every time I read a comment along those lines, i cannot help but think... what are you doing here? Give the site a little respect, or at least some credit. I'm one of probably thousands of people who often read the site, but rarely post. I read it because I feel like it can be extremely informative, but more so, i read it for the entertainment.

Everyone who is on here is very passionate about paddling. Of course there are going to be harsh words, sarcasm, and dissent. But that's what makes it informative and entertaining. This site is, in my opinion, awesome solely because of the posters... all of them. It is the "Harry, Larry, Curly, and Moes" that keep this place running.

Yankee, I think that everyone on here is more than happy with debate. But go back and read the last line of all of your posts and maybe you'll understand why you're offensive.

As far as anonymous posters... i think that everyone on here has a right to anonymity, a right which you have taken advantage of. Interestingly though, many of the people who disagreed with you most strongly (the people who i think you are referring to in your stooges diatribe), have their names on their profile.

And cutting tournament participation by 20% sucks. It doesn't seem like a cut like that could save all that much money...

Yankee
You need to lighten up. I've met a lot of the OCP Mafia at races or just paddling and they've all been hardcore paddlers. Sure, its never cut and dry here, that's life. You need to filter out the shit.
Paddling is a social sport, and this site an extension of what goes on on the water and on the beach.

Fuzerider, cut the "you people" shit.Who the hell are you? You are a nobody. You're a shitty paddler trying to make a name for himself by using Keizo's site. Hawaii's youth could jump in a 50lb. Kaiwi Challenger and leave you and your fuze behind in your own water. Pat Dolan, Ryan Dolan, Jack Roney, Kalei Kaho'okele, Kekoa Kau, Luke, Kelly and Puni Freitas. These kids who came up in Hawaii's youth paddling programs would kick your ass and sell more boats than you off of their pure talent, not their rambling on a public forum.
They learned their skill and developed positive attitudes with the help of Hawaiis youth paddling programs.
Yankee, I work, HARD. I bust my ass everyday to provide for my family. After work I coach high school kids or the summer season for FREE. Paddling saved me. I can see it helping a lot of the kids I coach. It is a great positive outlet for these kids. I know it's not the only one, but it's here for those that need something positive in their lives. We're not asking for a handout. Me and my canoe club will always be here to help whoever we can through paddling, for FREE. Fuzerider and Yankee, paddling in Hawaii is more than a sport or buisness. It is our culture and lifestyle. I don't think "you people" will ever understand that.

Karel dosen't need Eric McNobody.
Alfred and Jr. is just fine.

Luke, you can post criticism with the hope of improvement, but that hope can be a futile one. I know that is quite a concept for you to put your arms around.

Thank you, ALOEK and McLovin, for making my earlier points.

Helluva argument, McLovin, calling someone a "nobody." Hard to argue with that. Now, shouldn't you be arguing that you are a "somebody" and people should listen to you? That's how degrading the poster works. Don't listen to him, he's a nobody, listen to... It is called an ad hominem attack.

And ALOEK the "hahahaha" was just priceless.

Jif, if the the OCP Mafia are class guys, for many of us, the only way we know them is from this forum. If they are class guys that message, sadly, does not come through.

Your whole argument is an ad hominem attack, Yankee. You started the thing w/ your "we hard working republican taxpayers aren't going to subsidize your sport" tripe. Fuckin' save it, bro.

I`m hard at work here in Maine for nothing other than the benefit of Hawaiian paddling and Hawaiian paddlers.

If any one wants to lobby along with me .... feel free.

I`ll continue to report back here as progress and results occur.

Please try to keep the Fuze bashing to a minimum at this time,

Thank you...

You can't help yourself Fuze, but I did laugh!!!!!!

#82 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 3:49pm

OK Let's cut the shit here. Let's all man up here and post with our real names. No more anonymity. No more internet tough guy hiding behind a pseudonym. My name is Jim Hewitt. What's your real name? Post with it and quit hiding.

And glasscasepaddler......fuck you and your racist shit.

#83 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 5:00pm

ahhh shit, we've done it now, a guy from Virginia is no longer posting. At first, i was devastated, but then quickly realized he was probably a complete pussy so it's not that bad.

anyhow, as to everyone's favorite fluffer, yankeeho`okele, you have just moved into first place as ocpaddler.com's top douche bag.

I know you will have no trouble wrapping your arms around that one.

There is nothing wrong with an ad hominem attack in this thread's context. This is because you and mr. Fuze are ignorant of paddling's place and context in Hawai`i and the greater Pacific.

Hawaii has its own unique history and culture, to which paddling plays an integral part. An Amercian (liberal or conservative) socioeconomic analysis of the problem paddling is encountering in Hawaii is inappropriate.

Thus, when one of you douche bags tries to articulate an opinion about paddling in Hawaii or paddling in general, it is more than relevant to call you on your bullshit because 1) you are shitty paddler, and 2) more importantly, you are not from Hawaii nor are you knowledgeable about Hawai`i. Therefore, calling you a "nobody" in THIS thread's context is most definitely a substantive criticism of an ill advised opinion.

Stick to discussions about paddling on the east coast, I am tired of making myself look smart at your and fuzerider's expense.

#84 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 6:44pm

What is up with all of the paddlers? This thread started out about there being less crews in the states for High Schools, not dropping the sport. Now there are people going after each other having nothing to do with the topic. As I mentioned before, the sport is not cut, just fewer crews can paddle in the states, which is a little like the regatta season, as all crews have to qualify! Although it is a feel good to make the states at some point in time crews have to realize performance is what gets you there! Paddler harder and forget the politics!

#85 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 7:57pm

Jim [verylowtide]obviously you don't get it. Your interpretation "racist", yup you don't understand the culture.

#86 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 8:29pm

OMG - this thread has lost the aloha and pono that was the original concern - the kids.

#87 Sun, 06/21/2009 - 8:34pm

hahahahahhaahhahahahahahahahah! I just laugh! hahahah
ahhahahhahahahahahahahahahahhaha! All the F-bombs must be making Keizo laugh just as much as me! Hahahahha!

What's with this real name stuff? Everyone here knows who's who from paddling, regardless of what we post under. How do we really know that you're Jim Hewitt, who is Jim Hewitt?
Tides coming in.

#91 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 12:28pm

Jibofo...I have found on other forums that it helps to keep things honest and cuts down on a lot of the pointless personal stuff like people calling each other 'Fuckin Haole'.
I think people tend to think twice when they are posting under their own name.

#92 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 12:56pm

Verylowtide – can’t understand normal thinking …. Why would you assume that “haole fakka’s” is referring to race and not referring to a way of thinking? If you don’t understand a culture it’s wise to stay quiet before opening the hulapie hole.

#93 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 1:15pm

You make a very fine distinction, glasscase. It's just one I don't buy. I lived in Hawaii a long time and I understand exactly what you're talking about. Your comment is predicated on race.....if it was just about a way of thinking why would you include that word. Why not just say mainland thinking or Western thinking?
And I dare you to post under your real name. Quit hiding.

#94 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 1:38pm

verylowtide = can’t understand normal thinking
what about the word "jew". we can continue bashing each HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

#95 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 1:43pm

If can, can...if no can, bottle! Paddle then relax and have a beer.

Enjoy the ride!

#96 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 1:48pm

Jibofo, and anyone else who's wondering, "cranky" Jim Hewitt is long time paddler and former member of Hui Lanakila's bad ass masters crew of the Leighton Look era. He claims to be haole, but looks like one Portagee to me. Just my two cents, as a real white guy, I have no problem w/ the phrase "haole fakka". I use it all the time up here. Calling someone a Jew is usually not cool, unless you're buddies or are both Jews.

#97 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 1:52pm

This thread seems to have it all. Let’s see, we’ve collectively managed to offend Hawaiians, Californians, New Englanders, the OCP Mafia (past and present), Haoles (in whatever context you claim to use it), some guy from Virginia, and now Jews.

HVA I don’t think you should post any more current events.

#98 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 2:21pm

I think that when the site hits a long period of stagnation, everyone gets antsy waiting for the slightest bit of controversy so that we can get all of our bitterness out. It was pretty boring for pretty long before this thread.

Glasscasepaddler, out of curiosity, what do mean when you say "what about the word jew."?

#99 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 2:33pm

I'm the 100th post!!! Yes! (Is there a prize for that?)

#100 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 4:42pm

I am sure Yankee will offer you something for your highly educated and significant post, e02060!

mbsski, thanks for keeping it real.

"The Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association today approved proposals to reduce state tournament participation in most sports."

This means less teams qualify for states. As an athlete, less space for championship competition means working harder to be at that championship level. There are no proposed cuts to the number of teams that will attempt to qualify through league races and championships, just less championship participants. I say to the youth of Hawai'i and their coaches, set your goals high and work your butt off to attain them.

Otherwise, thanks for the entertainment!

#101 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 5:19pm

verylowtide
I think glasscase's point is that whereas one has no control over being a haole (or whatever), one does have control over whether they're "one stupid haole fakka".
That said, Maliko was frikken awesome this afternoon, the best its been in three or four months.

#102 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 6:26pm

Luke-

Words can have more than one interpretation or meaning.

example:
niggah
moke
portagee
haole
jew
etc.....

The above words can be used negatively or positively and all the above words have more than one definition.

fuckin nuff said already!

#103 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 7:22pm

get a locker room, your favorite bar (with plenty beer), an insane asylum, kindergarten, college lecture hall, and then throw em all in a mosh pit, starve em, and throw in a piece of meat.

seriously, how can you not love ocp?

#104 Mon, 06/22/2009 - 8:54pm

what i feel is wrong about this coming from kauai's point of view, the schools here have been trying to limit the highschool paddling for the last few years because it interferes with more important sports such as the end of football season, the start of baseball season, not to mention soccer season and swimming. and i agree looking at this from someone maybe trying to get into a college or even become a pro, paddling isnt the best decision. now back to my point the schools here have been trying to cut the paddling season by three weeks. they were trying to make it two races and one champ race then states, but the coaches, lorri, donine and aunty kaulana, fought really hard to make it four races, and last season two schools got to come to maui because there was an open slot, but next year, what? only one school from the whole island can compete, this bumms me out, because i remember the year i did well in states it was definitely without a doubt the best weekend of my life, and the kids are the ones who are going to miss out. politics or whatever it is, it seems wrong.

Just wanted to say a big Mahalo to HHSAA Director Keith Amemiya for donating $20,000 of his Ohana's own money to help the teens of Moloka'i and Lana'i, another $10,000 to Pearl City Football coaching staff and campaigning to raise the $400,000 for Hawaii High School athletics programs!

Mahalo also to the Clarence T. Ching Foundation who donated $200,000, First Hawaiian Bank $100,000, Bank of Hawaii $50,000 and The GIFT Foundation of Hawaii $50,000.
