WAILUA TO KALAPAKI BAY
by Mary Bartlett
THERE WERE SOME WILD CONDITIONS FOR THE LONG COURSE! The trades were blowing
and the seas were up making this race a real challenge for some. Many of the
paddlers hulied at least once, if not more times, as the seas were coming from
the ama side. This changed though when they rounded the Nawiliwili Lighthouse.
The conditions made for good racing with a lot of position changes throughout
the course. Peggy Spencer from the Big Island said these were the gnarliest
conditions she has ever raced in. Everyone made it through without a boat or
body breakdown. First in the Open Men’s division was David Beck of Hanalei
(paddling on a Mantra), who just started coming out again after taking a break
for a few years. David, along with Aukai Lee, won the first Molokai Channel
relay. It looks like David is gearing up for the $20,000 Kaua‘i World
Challenge in April. In second place was seventeen year old Luke Evslin on a
Kai Wa’a Wave Blade. Luke has consistently been doing well. Third was
Brian Carter on a Kolea. This shows it’s not the canoe, but the paddler
who makes it happen.
Katy Curtis from Anini Beach was the first woman, followed by Laurie Denton
and Robin Jumper with Mary Brewer only seconds behind. These ladies did a great
job in the challenging conditions!
Sanoe Hookano and Justin Tabalno were the first OC-2 across the finish, and
have really done well for their first season! It was great to see Wayne Alonzo
and Herbert Kekuawela out on their new Wave Blade two-man. They did very well,
and we hope to see them racing the rest of the season!
The short course was held inside Kalapaki Bay running up the Huleia River to
the Mango Tree turn and back. This course probably was a more demanding workout
as the 3 mile return leg was straight upwind in a 10 – 20 knot breeze.
First to finish was Jason Alexander and Brandon Pavo on an OC-2. First OC-1
was Raymond Manuel, out for one of his first races and on a Conners canoe! In
2nd place was Richard Pettigrew another first year paddler, and 3rd was Greg
Baxter who started competing toward the end of last season. It was a great performance
by all three! First in the women’s division was Jo Hookano enjoying (?)
her last race before moving back to Australia. In 2nd place was Mary Bartlett,
and Midge Horwood came in 3rd. There were a total of 50 boats, a lower number
than expected. Nevertheless those who participated had a great time as the weather
was very nice yet challenging. See race results for complete finish information.
It’s always nice to know that an ice-cold Steinlager
is waiting at the beach – the “carrot” at the finish of every
race!J Steinlager provided the post race beverages
for the adults, and Duke’s with their great staff and incredible setting
overlooking Kalapaki Bay, put on a fantastic lunch! We thank the people who
ran the race from start to finish: Jackie and Summer for registration and timing/finishing,
Dexter and Steve on the safety boats (who had their work cut out for them),
and the wonderful sponsors, Duke’s and Steinlager,
who always make this series a great event.
The next race is sponsored by Brenneke’s and Steinlager
on Sunday, March 2nd. The long course will be from Kalapaki Bay to Sheraton
Beach, the short course from Sheraton Beach to Port Allen. If the tradewinds
are up this will be the surf run of the season! Registration for the long course
will be at Kalapaki at 9 a.m. sharp. Short course sign up will be at Sheraton
Beach (Poipu) at about 10 a.m. Call Tom at 826-5503 with questions.
