For the second time this season, the trades came through for us! For the long course they were coming from the ama side for a good portion of the race, but for those in the short course, it was a surf "run" to be remembered! Only one boat breakdown where the rudder came loose, and our paddler steered at least the second half the short course with her paddle. What a workout and what a trooper! Now she's ready for Tahiti!

We were honored to have some of Hawaii's top paddlers visiting friends and family this weekend and to check out the Kalapaki to Poipu "run". This will be the third leg of the 2003 Steinlager Kaua'i World Challenge being held on Saturday, April 26th. First in the Open Men's division of the long course was Kai Bartlett of Oahu who states that this is one of his favorite "runs" of all the islands. David Beck of Hanalei came in second, with Butch Keahiolalo of Wailua following very close in third.
Lauren Spalding of Maui was the first woman finisher, followed by her good friend Noe Sawyer of Kapaa in second. Jackie Carswell of Kilauea, who has spent a good part of the paddling season snowboarding on the Mainland, came in third. Oh the joys of crosstraining!
Sanoe Hookano and Justin Tabalno were the first OC-2 across the finish, and definitely making their mark in the paddling circuit! Hopefully they are looking to partner up for the 2003 Steinlager Kaua'i World Challenge and the Molokai Channel!
In the Open Men's division of the short course it was Steve Baker in a very sound lead over Greg Baxter in second, with Andy Reich coming in third. This was a great race for Andy as he has been so busy with work, this is the first race he has been able to participate in this season. In the women's race it was Mary Bartlett in first, followed by Laola Lake in second, and Joy Chow in third. The whole short course open division, both men and women, were senior masters! All right!
It was a beautiful day at Poipu Beach Park, and later in the afternoon the wind began calming down. Bob French and Brennecke's Restaurant provided a fabulous lunch (and plenty of it) along with some great prizes. We are very thankful to Steinlager and Brennecke?s for their wonderful support of our sport. Again, we want to thank the people who ran the race from start to finish: Jackie and Summer for registration, they along with Ann Hermosura and Lovey Britton for timing/finishing, Dexter, Warwick, and our super county lifeguards on the safety boats. Our sponsors and these people make it happen -- they always make our races such great events.
The next race is sponsored by Kai Kane and Steinlager on Sunday, March 23rd. The long course will be from Kalihiwai Bay - to a buoy set out by Kilauea lighthouse - to Hanalei Bay, the short course is from Kalihiwai Bay to Hanalei Bay. Registration for both courses will be at Kalihiwai Bay at 9 a.m. Call Tom at 826-5503 with questions.
