Results of today's Kamaili Nursery Pohoiki Challenge, held in Puna District. This is the 4th event in the Steinlager/Tiger Canoes HIPA Points series. The long course began at Isaac Hale Park, Pohoiki in the Puna District, and travelled north about two miles before turning and heading south to finish at Kahena Beach with a total distance of 11.5 miles. The 7.5 mile short course also began at Isaac Hale Park, but ran straight south to its completion at Kahena Beach. The event drew paddlers from all over the Big Island, as well as from Maui, Oahu and Kauai. As in the past, the retrieval of the canoes up the face of the cliff was done by a chain of paddlers, passing the canoes, amas and surfskis hand to hand to the top of the cliff.

Feb 14 - Sixth Annual Valentines Relay - BigIsland

Today's Sixth Annual Valentines Relay was the best attended event of the season. Divisions and Categories were created on the spot to accommodate all paddlers - to include "Menage a Trois" with two guys tagging off the same wahine paddler on the beach at Kamakahonu, and even the "I can't get a Date" (M&M) category, pairing up two guys to paddle on the same team. Needless to say, figuring out the results was quite a challenge!
Happy Valentines Day to all!

Results of the Steinlager/Tiger Canoes HIPA Points Series Race held today sponsored by Keoua Canoe Club. Both events started and finished at Honaunau. Dedicated to UNCLE LUIE KELEKOLIO RACE, after a long time canoe paddler and Uncle of Keoua Canoe Club.

The race conditions were ideal today, the event having been postponed from last Saturday by the high surf - and almost affected this week by the thunderstorms that plagued the island over the past 36 hours. However, the day dawned clear with calm seas, and paddlers traveled from as far as Hilo and Opihikao to participate.
