Noe Auger, Kauai’s little dynamo, proved size or gender is of no issue as she flew past the women and many of the men in Sunday’s YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa’a season opener. A following sea and brisk easterly 20 mph winds made the Port Allen run a fast race for both the long and short course divisions who started at Sheraton and Kukuiula Harbor respectively. With a total of 43 entries in the long course, Noe placed a very respectable 13th overall, with a time of 1:12.52. Alana Goo, placed 2nd for the women coming in at 1:16.39 and Margie Goodno was 3rd at 1:22.13. Maui Kjeldsen, a newbie to our island but definitely not to the world of paddling, easily won the men’s long course division. He finished the 9-mile course in a ripping time of 1:04 and has definitely raised the bar for Kauai’s top paddlers. Mark Frazier was 2nd at 1:06.42 and Butch Keahialalo was 3rd at 1:07.03.

Casablanca Restaurant of Poipu Beach and refreshments by Budweiser, the organization’s main sponsor, provided an exceptional lunch. Many island businesses such as Keoki’s, Brennecke’s, Dukes, Kai Kane, Starbucks, Kauai Marriott, Grinds, Poipu Beach Broiler, Waimea Plantation Cottages, the Sheraton and the Hyatt have also helped make our seasons run smoothly. The association would also like to thank the Port Allen Fishing Club for the use of their clubhouse for the awards and food.

YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa’a is hosting their second paddling race of the season at 12:00 on Sunday, January 15.

Courses as follows: Short - Hanamaulu Bay to Kalapaki / Long - Wailua to Kalapaki. Registration from 10:00-11:00 @ Kalapaki.

Pre-race meetings will be held at 11:30 at both Hanamaulu and Kalapaki. The weather may dictate a course change so please call the race hot line @ 635-0388 for any race updates on Saturday January 14.
