Resort Quest Waimea Plantation Cottages Sponsors Race Five of YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa’a’s 2007 Anheuser-Busch Series
By Laurie Denton

When the trees aren’t moving, the ocean usually follows suit and on Sunday March 4, the paddlers of YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa’a had to show what they were really made of. In contrast to our last “victory at sea” race held on February 18, Sunday’s event was held beneath calm simmering skies which settled heavy over the ocean leaving an “oil slick” surface with barely a ripple. It didn’t seem to make much difference as to whether you were going up the coast towards Poipu or down towards Waimea - either way it was an over heated grind to the end.

Both the short and long courses began at Port Allen at noon. The 11 mile long course had about a mile of upwind paddling to Glass Beach where they rounded a buoy and headed to the finish at Waimea Plantation Cottages. The 8 mile short course headed straight to the Cottages from Port Allen.

In the men’s long course, Mark Frazier finished first in 1:21:56, followed by Mai Tai Danielson, visiting from Tahiti, in 1:23:09 and Maui Kjeldsen in 1:24:19. For the women Katy Curtis grabbed first again in 1:37:39, Margie Goodno was second in 1:42:46 and Alana Goo, third in 1:45:06. In the surfski division, Ken Denton was first to the beach in 1:19:42, Wes DaSilva followed in 1:21.50 and Laurie Denton was third in 1:27:06.

In the men’s short course, Adam Roversi was first in 1:12:36, followed by Kalani Addington in 1:15:18 and Greg Davis in 1:15:54. The women saw a very respectable overall finish by Mary Bartlett in 1:18:39. Needless to say she made the men nervous as well. Rumor has it that her husband Tom, whom she beat by a good margin, will be cooking dinner all week…Tracy Capman was second in 1:20:17 and Katy Otsuji followed in 1:21:40. In the mixed oc-2 division, Bae and Jodi Dela Cruz finished first in 1:13:07 and the team of Herb Kekuawela and Sandy Higa were second in 1:15:31.

YMCA Kauai Hoe Wa’a would like to thank Resort Quest’s Waimea Plantation Cottages for the great lunch as well as the following volunteers: escort captains, Joe Laukona and Dino D’Annibale, timers, Sara Deblin, Jodi Kjeldsen, and Audrey Bernadino, registrars, Beth Kauwe, Tracy Capman and Jon Kegle, and our race director, Mark Frazier.

Don’t forget, coming up on May 10-12 is Expedia’s Kauai World Challenge Relay. This year a 6-man race has been added with a 5000.00 purse attached. Not to be missed will be the World champions from the Gold Coast of Australia who will no doubt offer some real competition in both the relay and the OC-6 divisions. The first two minutes is a rap song, if you're not into that sort of thing. Other than that, good race recap video by Aaron K Labuguen.
