Ma'a Afi

Was considering buying the Ma'a Afi from Pineula Va'a, but don't know anybody who owns one. Does anyone have any reviews? comments ?

onnopaddle commented on it in the "Big Island One Manners" thread which was posted in the General Forum.

There was another thread earlier this year titled "Check out new oc-1" that also talked a little about it.

Papus new canoe, designed by steve blythe (designed the original wave blade, then polaris w/kai), Nick aragostos and steve have both competitively run the ma a fi, doing very well on it.

The Ma'a Afi was designed for more spread out conditions like in the Kaiwi Channel or smaller conditions. The Vantage is so good in tight wave conditions but its weakness is when its more spread out. It doesn't get the carry you need in the channel. I think we achieved that with the Ma'a Afi. It slides into ground swell and carries really well. It has a soft, flat bottomed V cross-section that has alot of reserve bouyancy when you need it, but when its small its out of the water. Its got a super comfortable seat and a stable feel even when rigged light. I believe its the best all around canoe I've designed. Dea Ya Go, A Hui Ho

Seafarer

You could submit the specifics of the boat to a spreadsheet that lists some of the more common oc1s ( http://www.oc1design.blogspot.com bottom left of the site )

Another nice thing about the Ma'a Afi is that it does well rudderless. It has enough track to do it for long periods of time, even in the small bumps. Nick has been doing it quite abit.

We don;t see the Ma;a Afi on Oahu that often. I just heard a brief comment: good in the flats, good glide.

Is there anybody that paddles this boat regularly and wants to comment, I'd love to collect some opinions about it.

I got mine last summer. I think it is the best boat I've owned. And I've owned alot .Naia, Ono, Mantra,Polaris2x,Spica,Hurrican2x,Pahoe,Wainui. This is by far the the best for my size and paddling style 6'4" 200+(Very good surfer, Poor in the flats). The boat has a long glide in the waves. Easy to slide form one to the other with one long stroke. The boat is v shaped.Lots of rocker. Wide at the seat, out of the water. In big stuff it lifts up and pushes forward.

I was able to test the Ma'a Afi 3 weeks ago at Keehi Lagoon. I'm 6 feet 220 lb. It ran smooth in the flats, good response, drained well and sat high in the water considering my weight. Didn't do a ocean run. Thinking about buying one.
