YMCA Kauai Hoe Waa March 8th Race Results

If you didn’t participate on Sundays race you were one of the lucky ones. Guy Hagi’s forecast of 15 mph trades seemed like a promising south shore run from Poipu Beach to Salt Pond. To simplify race logistics it was one course, with one start for both long and short course paddlers. Roughly 50 paddlers took the bait in anticipation of a fun 10 mile downwinder. As predicted the wind picked up just about noon when the race started and lasted about 5 minutes. The remainder of the race was a long, hot, flat grind. There were even reports of dehydration and vomiting along the way. For those who wanted to practice their flat water technique, this race offered ample opportunity. For many of the paddlers, short and long course alike the consensus was that the conditions were brutal. The good news from the timers was that it was one of the easiest races to time and that the safety boats John Rosario and Tim Cotchay did an outstanding job. Lesson learned . . . consider going rudderless.
Special mention goes out to Jody Simpson overall men’s winner who came in ahead of the surfskis and also to Chris Pico who braved the course as the lone stand up warrior.
