Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a Race 4
The stiff winds that blew from the west north west on Thursday, Friday and Saturday backed off teasing the paddlers with light breezes from the west south west. This lingering breeze was enough to reverse the racecourse and end at Kalapaki Beach the original start of the race. The long course started at Kukuiula Harbor (12 miles) and the short course started at Waiohai Beach (10 miles).
Congratulations to two Kaua‘i kamaaiana Luke Evslin who won the long course and Makana Denton who came in fourth and to our frequent Kaua‘i visitor Jamie Kinard who came in third. Congratulations to Alana Goo-Frazier for winning the women’s long course; and Tony Zina and Denise Morrison men’s and women’s winners of the short course..
Mahalo to the timers Linda Vass and Fran and Kyle McDonald; to Jody DeLa Cruz for always preparing plenty ono food; and to safety personnel Captain Dave and Tim Cotchay for providing boat and jet ski escorts.
Although no one heeded our tip from the last race encouraging more paddlers to race their rudderless canoes, we want to leave you with another race tip. Ever have a flat tire and you think to yourself . . . no worry get one spare tire in da trunk? You go to the trunk and the spare is flat or it’s the tiny factory tire. Today’s race tip: In a race make sure your extra paddle is good and it is the right size. Always carry a spare paddle. Be safe. Respect the ocean . . . and that’s straight from the kupuna.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Island Championships on Sunday March 29. Paddlers can expect more great ocean comraderie, ono food and door prizes.
