Battle With Paddles

The following are excerpts from the titled article in the Honolulu Advertiser...

Wounded troops, others to battle, but with paddles

By William Cole
Advertiser Military Writer

A May 30 canoe regatta to bring attention to Hawai'i's wounded warriors.

U.S. Attorney for Hawai'i Ed Kubo Jr. said there are approximately 300 wounded service members recovering in Hawai'i.

More than 50 teams are signed up for the quarter-mile canoe races that will be held off Rainbow Point near the USS Arizona Memorial visitor center, which will include an "armed forces" race pitting teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and the Honolulu police and fire departments against one another.

A second race will feature mixed teams of men and women, and a "heroes race" will have canoes with wounded warriors. Kubo said a fourth race will include special operations people, including SEALs, along with the elite from the fire department and police department SWAT team.

Kubo said Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, the Pacific Resource Partnership and HPD also have been major contributors. The regatta will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on May 30. For more information, call 440-9269.

Makapuu Challenge Results

MAKAPUU CHALLENGE
Sunday, May 10, 2009
Epic Kayaks presented the 1st Annual Makapuu Challenge with an international field of paddlers. The thirty-five surfski entrants represented Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, USA, and Hawaii – USA.
A total field of 43 Surfski’s and OC1’s started the 16 mile course with a very light trade wind offering little help as they made their way along one of Oahu’s most scenic coastlines.
Hank McGregor (South Africa) lead the charge after completing a 48 hour flight and arriving in Honolulu the night before. Hank was on the only V12 in the field and appeared to comfortably shake off any jet lag as he led start to finish. Epic Team Mate Clint Robinson (Australia) who has been in Hawaii the last week elected not to race – letting Hank run the field without a challenge.
The light trade winds tamed the usual washing machine conditions around Makapuu Point and offered only a small push as the paddlers rounded the point and headed to Hanauma Bay and Portlock Point.
As the field passed Portlock Point and headed across Maunalua Bay the heat definitely took its toll as caps were dipped in the water and racing jerseys were discarded. The current was fickle and it was difficult to stay in it – local knowledge definitely helped four Hawaiians who placed in the top 10.
Hawaiian Maggie Twigg-Smith did her best to flex some female muscle on Mother’s Day placing 28th overall and finishing as the first female in front Julie Stanton (Australia).
Today’s results are on the following website:

Sharks and conditioning

This was in the paper a week ago. Their tracking research (half way down under "Coastal Patrolling") indicates that Tiger sharks tend to become conditioned to congregate in areas due to manmade causes. I found this interesting because for several years I have observed on many occasions a Salt Water Specialty cleaning its fish inside Portlock Point, just off to the side from where we begin the Hawaii Kai run.

Boat / Board Transport to Maui for Olukai Event 16 - 17 May

Aloha,

Looking to see if a club or group is making a bulk shipment of canoes/SUPs from Oahu to Maui and back for the Olukai sponsored races on 16 - 17 May. Would very much like to participate in the events. However, with the Superferry gone, getting my equipment over to Maui and back is posing a challenge.

Thanks

Out-of-town paddler (Waikiki)?

I'll be visiting Oahu May 19 - 26, and just wondering if there are any local clubs around the Waikiki area that would welcome a guest Canadian paddler for a workout?

Thanks!
