my heros

i would like to thank everyone who voiced an opinion on the shark tours that were going to be run out of maunalua bay. my big hero is alfredVG ..he is the one who got this all going. had he not brought it up on this forum, not any of us wouldve known about the tours until it was too late. in case you didnt catch last nights news, iolani lewis has left hawaii kai and says he wont do the shark tours off maunalua bay. great. but im sure he will be doing them some where else. this wasnt about stopping shark feeding in maunalua bay. to me it was about stopping shark feeding tours. it doesnt matter if its east oahu, or west oahu. sharks dont need to be fed.leave them be.iolani says it is to educate the public about sharks.NOT. its about making money. at $100/person, 5 people a trip, 2-3 trips /day...yeah. thats big bucks. so lets stay alert and keep our collective eyes and ears open.
the meeting is still going to be held and iolani says he will be there. please come. lets hear what he has to say and then lets say what we feel.it is on thursday 4/16 7:00 at kamiloiki school. thank you all again for the support. this shows that when we stand together we can get noticed.

I'm coming to Maui, I need to hook up and paddle with an OC crew and I'd like to take an OC1 out in the mornings

Hello Everyone:

I'm part of a dragon boat racing and OC club here in Portland, OR. I'll be in Maui the 14th - 19th and would like to practice with an OC crew while I'm there and also have access to an OC1 to paddle in the mornings.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll be staying at the Westin in Kaanapali.

I'm glad to hear from you!! Please email me at eardantz@r2cgroup.com. You may also look me up on Facebook under Elena Mercer-Ardantz.

Hinano State Race & Soljah Series Re-cap

Apr 1 2009 5:08 am
Apr 1 2009 5:12 pm
Etc/GMT-10
Event Description:

Kanaka Ikaika presents the Hinano State Championship and
Soljah Series Recap.
What: The 2009 Hinano State Championship race for Open Ocean OC-1, OC-2, Stand Up and Surfski paddlers. This is the 8th and final race of Kanaka Ikaika’s SOLJAH SERIES which has been in effect since January. This is the last race of the season before the Molokai races which begin on April 19 with the PAA Molokai Championship.
When: Sunday April 05, 2009
- Registration 6:30 – 8:00 A.M. at Kailua Beach Park
ENZA Fruit and Swoish Produce will provide complimentary “Pacific Rose” Apples from New Zealand at registration.
Free Tee shirt compliments of JCS Enterprises and SOLJAH for the first 200 paddlers to register.
- Long Course starts at 9:00 AM
- Short Course starts at 10:00 AM
- First Paddlers are expected about 11:30 AM
Where:
-Long Course will start from Kailua Beach Park, around Makapuu and the south end of Oahu, through Maunalua Bay and finish at Kaimana Beach in Waikiki.
-Short Course will start off the beach in Hawaii Kai. Instead of going directly to Kaimana Beach, the course will go back up towards Portlock Point before turning on a buoy and heading to the finish at Kaimana Beach.
Awards for the Hinano State Race and lunch will follow directly after at Lulu’s Waikiki (Corner of Kalakaua and Kapahulu) with ono food, lots of prizes and Hinano Beer specials. KIALOA will raffle a new paddle, and for those with kids, grandchildren, nephews or nieces, you can win a child’s AQUABEBE SWIM AID, the newest in babies’ water toys from Foti Bros.
Soljah Series Re-cap: The Soljah Series saw many new faces in the winner’s circle this spring. Names of past year’s OC-1 winners like Karel Tresnak, Kai Bartlett, Mike Judd, John Foti, Mark Rigg and other competitive paddlers either didn’t even race this season, or barely surfaced. However, picking up the slack were paddlers like Mael Carey, Jimmy Austin, Kea Paiaina and Danny Ching. And in the XCEL Oahu Championship on March 21st, Aaron Napolean proved that he is still in the game winning his first overall race in a few years. Arlene Holzman is still dominating the women in the OC-1 with Jessica Eames on her tail. Lauren Bartlett raced one race this year and won.
The Surf Ski division has been dominated by our visiting resident Szolt Szadovski. However, Steve Kelly, Sean Monahan, Stuart Gassner and other fast paddlers are still in the hunt for the State Championship. Maggie Twigg-Smith was the only female in the XCEL Oahu Championship’s Ski division.

No Escort Boats In 2009 Molokai World Championships?

"Perhaps the biggest changes are:

The elimination of mandatory escort boats
Entry Fee covers the cost of increased safety boats and the Makapuu Challenge race on 05/10/09
Makapuu Challenge Race 05/10/09
A halfway point in the Channel Race that all paddlers will need to pass - a waypoint will be given and GPS will be required - Two Official Boats will mark the waypoint.
Channel Race Finish returns to Koko Marina inside the marina "

Any money out there for kids wanting to do solo

I am 16 and have been training for Molokai on a ski, but don’t have the money for a escort boat and all the other expenses. Whenever I ask people about grants or sponsorships all they tell me is that I just have to ask people.
