Makana Alii Repair (epoxy or varnish or both)

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Makana Alli paddles are coated with varnish or an epoxy? I need to do some repair to my paddle which will include some fiber glass cloth -- the bottom edge has a split in the wood.

I recoated a previous paddle, that was flaking with Epifanes varnish and it came out so beautiful (about 3 coats). I guess I'm just wondering if you can mix the epifanes and the epoxy? I'm assuming I have to use epoxy for the glass job. But, I also need to refinish the shaft and was thinking to use the varnish.

Anyone have experience or ideas?

Aloha hou,

My name is Marta and I am the director-producer of "I Just Love to Paddle" short documentary on Uncle Nappy Napoleon. I am horored to invite you to a premiere screening that will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 7pm at Still & Moving Center on 1024 Queen st in Honolulu.

This movie is a labor of love. It portrays Uncle Nappy as the paradigm of a Hawaiian Waterman which he is and his family as a paradigm of a modern Hawaiian family. Nappy Napoleon will make a guest appearance at the premiere screening.
