Event Description:

Aloha!

The 6th Annual Shark Bite Challenge will take place on April 15-17, 2011 (in conjunction with the Island Earth Days Festival). The Shark Bite Challenge features 2-days of paddling and racing. Saturday's races include 6-person Hawaiian Outrigger Canoes. The 45-foot long, traditional canoes are quite a site to see! Historically, the canoes were the Polynesians' ancient form of transportation. Today, the canoes are Hawaii's most popular sport, and the sport continues to grow around the world. Sunday's races include categories for surfksi's, OC1′s, OC2′s, kayaks, canoes, prone paddleboards and SUP's. Both races will paddle along the coastlines of Honeymoon Island State Park, and her sister barrier island, Caladesi State Park. Caladesi was ranked #1 Beach in America in 2008.

Last year, the Shark Bite Challenge hosted 150 paddlers from all over the country. This year, the event plans on having more, especially with the addition of the Stand Up Paddleboard classes on Sunday. All proceeds of the Shark Bite Challenge benefit Friends of the Island Park, a citizen supported and non-profit organization that supports the efforts of Honeymoon and Caladesi Island State Parks.

Wetsuits?

OK, more research into my recent OC-1 obsession. I am in FL and am a real sissy about the cold air and water temps. At least what feels cold to me which is anything below 70. I am preparing to buy a wetsuit for my SUP. Do you guys use wetsuits in an OC or is there more appropriate foul weather gear? Thanks again for walking me through my learning process.

Introduction and car top carrying question

Hi all, my name is Eric and I am in Tampa, FL. I am seriously contemplating the purchase of an OC-1 and, if so, hope to become an active member of your community. I have spent the last couple of weeks watching You Tube videos and reading everything I can regarding the OC. I am a fitness nut and water junkie so the OC should feed both of those desires. My SUP time has made me less and less interested in being trapped inside my sea kayak which is a freakin shame as I JUST spent $2700 on a beautiful new QCC kayak that is fast and stable.

Try before buy-OC-1.
