Blade Angle

Why does an OR blade/shaft path need to remain vertical but a kayak or surfski blade can be at an angle? With all things being equal, the pressure on the back of the blade is the same whether vertical or slightly angled.

I have long arms so it's easier for me to keep my arms straighter if I put a slight angle to the blade/shaft, allowing me to use my larger torso/back muscles throughout the stroke. Staying vertical and drawing straight down next to the boat causes more bending of my lower arm thus using the smaller muscles of my arm.

I know what your supposed to do, but haven't found out exactly why there is a difference between the two blade/shaft angles.

Paddling in Samoa started back in the late 80's and has taken a while to find its way into the Samoan sporting arena. But we have been fortunate with hosting the South Pacfic games last year in 2007. local paddlers were given a chance to race amongst various other countries and gauge themselves with some of the worlds best.

With the games come and gone SOCA ( Samoa outrigger Canoe Aoc.) has been working hard to keep the momentum going. They now have 18 V6 IVF approved Mana 6's from fiji and 18 V1 surf riggers to work with. They have an established secured storage area where all the boats are being kept for future races.

We would like to welcome any paddler who is keen to travel, compete and experience Samoa, please feel free to contact us via email. Next year 2009 we hope to launch our own international va'a comp called Va'a Moana. Details of this event will be hopefully finalized before the end of the year.

thanks again,

Information about a paddling event in Europe (the Netherlands)

Hello!

I am trying to organize a paddling event with my friend LeJean Coetzee in the Netherlands. We are from France and South Africa and love both surfing and SUPping..

I made a website (which is not completely finalized/fixed in details) to show you what it would be: a nice and pleasant competition/challenge of SUP, paddle board, ski surf and outrigger.
www.tulipaddle.nl

I have already noticed a few interesting paddling routes around the tulip fields…

I am contacting campings to find a good accommodation for participants.
I am in touch with the Holland Surfing Association (www.hsa.nl) so that they support/help me for this event.

I give you this information in case of you might think to go to Europe and you need an excuse to take your board with...

This is a non-commercial challenge organized by myself and a few friends to allow people to discover the tulip field area and to have a nice time in the Netherlands.

If you are interested and want to know more, I invite you to contact me at postmaster@tulipaddle.nl or vivelesurf@gmail.com

Kind regards,

Help!!!

I recently got married on November 8th, Saturday. The very next day I ended up doing a Hawaii Kai surf run in the afternoon and used my wifes Pegasus which has the bungee storage in the front. Anyways I always take my wallet, phone, and now wedding ring and put it in my pelican case and place it in the bungee storage. I ended up taking off on some bombers and once I reach "rice bowls" I noticed the pelican case was missing. Paddled upwind and nothing. Its probably floating somewhere, but if anyone finds it please call my wife Crissy Helm at (808) 864-3051. Not even 24 hours and I'm in the dog house.

Never mind the cell phone or wallet (no money anyways), just the wedding ring please. And easy on the bashing, I'll take the bone headed move for the year.

Coast Guard Race

Dear Tad,

Kudos to you for the wonderful race. It was organized beautifully, had plenty of safety boats, and the spirit of what we came together for was made even more profound by the dolphins that escorted me for a short while.

Mahalo for your good work.

Aloha,

Jackie

Moloka'i races

Thank you to everyone for their awesome ideas. I am the person who has been soley responsible for soliciting sponsorship for the Moloka'i Hoe for the last 3 years of which some funding goes to the Na Wahine race.
Please note that this is a 100% volunteer position for everyone involved and we do this because we believe in the tradition of these races.

~ Paddlers can assist; patronize our sponsors.

~ You can write to your local representative and/or send letters to the C&C and State offices for more funding for our State sport. We paid $ 2000.00 in 2007 and had arranged to pay an additional $ 2000.00 for parking priveledges for the stalls for our trailers. NO ONE BUT 3 TRAILERS USED THIS IN 2007 and for the Na Wahine race 2 trailers utilized this priveldge.

We received no variance from the state, no special allowance, nothing! Yes we are trying to work with the state for 2009 but unfortunately too many of our clubs have abused the trailer access in the past by blocking the entrance etc...HOWEVER, this year we had no stalls for the men's race and it was the most controlled than ever before. Why? because the clubs worked together. They helped each other and we had NO COMPLAINTS from DLNR. So when we speak to them about 2009 it will be so much easier to get what we need because we had no complaints from surrounding venues.

~ If you or someone you know has a company that may be interested in sponsoring these events we are "flexible" in our sponsor packets so that the sponsor will get the most of their marketing dollars. The options are endless and in 2008 we have had more marketing opportunities and more publicity on the race than ever before...thanks to our partners, Pacific Paddler, Makai Magazine and Ocean Paddler TV.

~ We are a 501c(3) entity, but unfortunately that doesn't carry much clout unless you have someone who is willing to write grants on a full time basis to submit for funding and this is a yearly task. Anyone interested?

~ I have written the grant for HTA for funding for the last 4 years. Each year the support has been substantially less and anyone who knows about event building, (3) YEARS is the magic number, however, we have been delayed because of funding.

~ We do have a governing body that is fiscally responsible for the races and that is the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association for the Hoe and the Na Wahine O Ke Kai committee for the women's race.

~ Get involved! Get involved! Get involved!

~ We receive NO SPONSORSHIP from the canoe builders. We received NO SPONSORSHIP from the OC-1 makers and OC-6 paddlers are OC-1 paddlers so there is definitely a connection. Thank you to KIALOA PADDLES.

~ We have branded our race and have made some great advances this year and we are trying to make sure that we cover these costs so that we DON'T have to raise the fee of the race. The cost for each crew to cross the channel for the organization is $ 1104.00 and we charge $ 575.00 for each crew.

So when we ask you NOT to fly the flag of a competitive beer company or request that you paddle directly to the shores of Waikiki so that our sponsors can see the flock of supporters and have photo opportunity for their marketing efforts then please accommodate our request.

~ We will continue these races even in these difficult economic times. We will continue this tradition and offer it to our local crews and welcome our paddling ohana through out the world. However, in our efforts to bring this to the "next" level, be prepared for some changes in the upcoming years...and support our efforts.

~ I would be more than happy to send anyone the demographics of statistics that we were able to collect and a 2009 sponsorship packet via email or hard copy.

We are committed to these races and the sport of outrigger canoe paddling and will provide a venue for our paddlers so that they can concentrate on paddling and winning!

Mahalo for your suggestions, they are truly appreciated and will be taken into consideration...
