Results of Mike O'Shaughnessy's East Hawaii Challenge, the third race of the 2005 Hawaii Island Paddlesports Association (HIPA) Series.

Hanohano Outrigger Canoe Club hosted another successful Surfski, Canoe, Kayak, Paddleboard race in Mission Bay, San Diego, California. Among the field of competitors from all paddling disciplines and walks of life were Olympic Kayakers a number of National level Canoeists and kayakers and Olympic hopefuls representing the San Diego Junior Olympic Program and Newport Aquatic center. The wind was blowing under clear skys for the approx 180+ paddlers to enjoy one of the few opportunities available for this type of competition in San Diego.

Nominations are now being accepted for this years Powerade Hamilton Island Cup held in the stunning Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. This event is the most prestigious and challenging event in Australia and attracts about 1,000 competitors from around the world each year.

With the Kihei waters looking a bit challenging on Fri. coupled with the forecast for strong SSW winds on Sat. Maui organizers and paddlers got on the cell and internet to plan for adjustments. It was a good call. We started our grand season opener at Sarento's on the Beach in Kihei, South Maui, paddled up, YES, UPWIND for 3 miles to Makena landing before turning around to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It was a challenging first race of the season. Especially for those of us in "top shape".
