Race Around the Hat

Sep 10 2011 8:01 am
Etc/GMT-10
Event Description:

Third annual Race Around the Hat at Kualoa Beach Park.

Event to include two races per division with the fastest total time being the winner. There are no heats this year. The race will feature a short prologue for each division (men, women, juniors, etc) and a longer final race for the championship. As always we will try to coordinate loaner canoes for those who do not own a rudderless and the race will somehow go around The Hat.

Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai race pictures

I have set up a website with photos from the last ten years of the Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai races. They are available for sale from the website, with the nominal profit from the sale going to the race organizations to help defray the costs of putting on the races, and ultimately benefitting the paddlers and clubs participating in these great events.

I am a physician who has committed (for life!) to helping keep the races safe.

I look forward to seeing all of you through the lens, and not in the back of a Medical Boat!

Enjoy the pictures.

channel crossing

on sunday 2/27 mike spalding ( father of lauren bartlett) swam the 32 mile alenuihaha channel . starting at 3:00am at upolu point big island and finished at 10:43 pm at nu'u bay maui. 19 hours and 43 min. no touching of anything in between. you guys think paddling the molokai channel is tough..you are sitting in a boat for 15-30 minutes and then get out to rest. even if you iron the crossing..you arent out there for even half that time. think about this next time you get tired while paddling . oh yeah...mike is 63...

HCKT funding

We had mentioned it at the Kialoa to Kalapawai race, but we just want everyone to know that this year Kanaka Ikaika is dubbing the Poai Puni series the "HCKT Poai Puni Series", as a portion of every entry fee goes towards support of the Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team, and the Hawaii based USACK program. As many know, HCKT is no longer funded and this makes it extremely difficult for our young athletes to focus on their goals. The paddlers of HCKT will strive to represent us all against the world. So anytime you have a chance, do something to support the program.

Steering seminars?

New to the site, new to paddling in general. Started last march with OC6 and OC1's and got hooked. Tried steering and loved it, although I didn't race last season I've paddled and cross-trained non-stop for this season's Novice B. I've been putting as much time possible on the water, trying to gain knowledge and skills. Although I have gotten some small kine instruction/coaching I am looking for more. I've read and reread and still read The Art of Steering. Watch any kine video I can find on steering or paddling in general, talk story and ask questions.......want more. :)
