New Year's Challenge

Jan 2 2010 11:00 am
Etc/GMT-7
Event Description:

Come join us for the First Annual New Year’s Challenge on January 2nd, 2010. Compete against outrigger canoes, surf skis, kayaks, standup paddle boards, and many other human powered crafts. See some of the best paddlers the Northwest has to offer as they race from Gas Works Park, through the Montlake Cut, north to Magnuson Park, and finally finishing at Sail Sand Point.

Pre-registration for this event is recommended. For a $30.00 registration fee, each participant receives a race t-shirt, lunch, and shuttle service after the race. We have a limited supply of event t-shirts, but all participants who pre-register will be guaranteed a t-shirt of their size. Lunch will be provided to all participants by the Hungry Paddler at the end of the race at Sail Sand Point. A shuttle service will be provided to assist participants in retrieving their vehicles from the race start area.

Race day registration is also available and opens at 9:00 AM on race day at 2300 N. Northlake Way, Seattle, WA 98103, home of Seattle Outrigger Canoe Club.

The race will start promptly at 11:00AM. All paddlers will be required to have life vests with them during the entire race.

Awards ceremonies will be held shortly thereafter to present our perpetual trophy Championship Belt to the fastest man and fastest woman paddler on the water. We’ll also be presenting various other awards to top category finishers.

This is a fundraising event and all proceeds from the race will go to Sail Sand Point Outrigger Club, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

We hope that you’ll be able to join us on January 2nd in the 2010 New Year’s Challenge!

What to Wear When Paddling in Colder Areas

I will be moving up to WA this winter and would like to know what people wear to paddle in the PNW. I tend to get very hot while paddling so I will need clothes that breathe or vent. In Hawaii I cannot wear long sleeved paddling jerseys because I overheat. I suspect there are also some suggestions for what types of clothing will help if one were to huli.
