Dave Kalama on top in Maliko day after states race - Aug 7

Why did we run an OC-1? Maliko race the day after states? Easy, so that all our visiting friends who came to Maui for the States and whom may never make it over during the OC-1 season would get a chance to experience our downwind run. Was it worth it? You bet ya!

Maui Maliko Hana Hou Race Results – April 16

As you can see from the results, we had an awesome run on Sat. The waves were not as big as during our first Maliko, instead they were easier to catch and ride and connect, they were cleaner. Those must have been some of the longest rides we’ve been on – what a blast. Mahalo to our Maui paddlers and those visiting for a fair start. To line-up outside in the deep blue and to be fairly in line is a great accomplishment.

It turned out to be an okay day for us. Some wind, a few rain drops, whales, reef, not too hot but still a lot of hard work. We started off with 2 water patrol boats experiencing engine trouble. Head official Kalela had to pull his boat out but thankfully he swam out to set the finish buoy. Mary was able to fix her problem and joined us at the start of the short course. Mahalo to Cary and Shauna, our certified lifeguards on jet skis, for running with the long course and being the turn “buoy” at Haycraft.

Bartlett & Spalding tops in Maui Season Kick Off - Jan 15

With the Kihei waters looking a bit challenging on Fri. coupled with the forecast for strong SSW winds on Sat. Maui organizers and paddlers got on the cell and internet to plan for adjustments. It was a good call. We started our grand season opener at Sarento's on the Beach in Kihei, South Maui, paddled up, YES, UPWIND for 3 miles to Makena landing before turning around to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It was a challenging first race of the season. Especially for those of us in "top shape".
