Flight of the Kona Sailing Canoe - Video

On the weekend myself and paddlers of the Mandurah Outrigger Canoe Club had a fantastic adventure. “Kona” the 1st Hawaiian Sailing Canoe to sail in the Indian Ocean took flight off Mandurah in Western Australia in a perfect 20 knots of Freo Doctor wind. We’d towed the canoe down the inside of the estuary from Mandurah, then put the rig up and sailed it out through The Cut and into the ocean then pointed it north and hung on!

PA'A 'EONO HOE Canoe Designs

Aloha gang,

I have been working on the Pa'a 'Eono Hoe rules and guidelines for 2011 which will be a slightly modified version of the 2010 open design rules. I know that there are builders at work here in Hawaii and throughout the world, and I've been getting a lot of input from them. I will post within the next few days so that we are all on the same page.

Mahalo for supporting our advancements,
Manny & PA'A crew

Na wahine o ke kai TV special

Aloha gang, I wanted to let you know the Na wahine o ke kai special will start to air this sunday night Oct 24th on channel 16. It will re-broadcast several times. Those of you out of state can watch it by going to www.oc16.tv. They stream live.

A hui hou,
Terry

PA'A now has 6 man division (open design)

If we want open designs to really take off I think this is one of the routes that need to be utilized. The more we support these 6 man races the more people will have them, then they will get more exposure and eventually that will result in to more money to the sport. If you own a 6 man or can get your hands on an open design (or traditional boat) then bring out your boat and show that their is demand for these races.

Now that more races are allowing open designs; I for one will have better options and a better argument to get sponsorship money from businesses. This will help us all.

Training/Certification?Regulation?? for escort boat drivers

We take it for granted that every time we hire an escort boat they "know the ropes". Some do- some don't, some have years of experience and some are novice. Sometimes we assume they know how to drop off and pick up paddlers. That they would know something as basic as when to turn off the engine, and to count heads before it is turned on. I know of 2 occasions when paddlers have been hurt by negligent drivers and their helpers. I'm thinking that maybe basic training and or certification would be a good idea. Something preventive rather than tightening up of waivers to protect liability.

Wounded Warrior

Thanks to all the paddlers who came out to our fund raiser on October 16th for the Wounded Warrior Program. We as paddlers raised over $4,000 for the program which helps buy equipment to help soldiers rehabilitate by taking part in outdoor activities. Thanks also to Jimmy Buffett's who put on a ono lunch and OHCRA who helped run the event.
