Honolulu Advertiser Article about Sunday’s race…

Huki V1-X versus Hurricane

I paddle a Huki V1-X but have to paddle a Hurricane this weekend for a time trial.

I've never been on a Hurricane before.

The time trial is about 400 meters long in calm/flat water.

Are there any differences I should be aware of?

Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.

my heros

i would like to thank everyone who voiced an opinion on the shark tours that were going to be run out of maunalua bay. my big hero is alfredVG ..he is the one who got this all going. had he not brought it up on this forum, not any of us wouldve known about the tours until it was too late. in case you didnt catch last nights news, iolani lewis has left hawaii kai and says he wont do the shark tours off maunalua bay. great. but im sure he will be doing them some where else. this wasnt about stopping shark feeding in maunalua bay. to me it was about stopping shark feeding tours. it doesnt matter if its east oahu, or west oahu. sharks dont need to be fed.leave them be.iolani says it is to educate the public about sharks.NOT. its about making money. at $100/person, 5 people a trip, 2-3 trips /day...yeah. thats big bucks. so lets stay alert and keep our collective eyes and ears open.
the meeting is still going to be held and iolani says he will be there. please come. lets hear what he has to say and then lets say what we feel.it is on thursday 4/16 7:00 at kamiloiki school. thank you all again for the support. this shows that when we stand together we can get noticed.

Veteran osprey lays Easter egg

The UK's oldest breeding pair of ospreys have produced a record-breaking 53rd egg in time for Easter.
The pair surprised conservationists in Scotland by surviving a gruelling 3,000 mile (4,828km) migration from Africa.
Volunteers at the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve in Perthshire had been worried that their 20-year-old female Osprey would not return.
But the birds, who have been together for 15 years, arrived within days of each other and began breeding.
Rangers had been concerned that the female would not survive the migration.
But in March she swooped into her nest and started to prepare for her mate.
The male duly arrived a few days later and the couple resumed their 15-year relationship.
In time for Easter, the record-breaking 53rd egg was laid - another valuable boost to Perthshire's growing osprey population.
The egg should hatch in six weeks.

lightning stikes

So i was out the other day and got caught in a bit of a flash storm, a very common occurrence this time of year around here. It was a pretty bad one - lots of very close lightning (1 second interval type stuff) - so I made a bee line to one of the nearest islands for shelter. However, going to the island, I had to navigate some hefty and dangerous whitewater reef waves, then shallow water rocks and coral requiring me to get off my boat and carry it in over this dangerous rock surface risking getting knocked over by waves and cutting up my feet. lastly, this 'unused' beach was littered with large shards of glass that were diff'c'lt to see in this stormy situation.

So as i sat there waiting for the storm to move on I wondered what was really the safer option in this matter? Going to the island I could have: 1. hulied in very bad shore water conditions putting me at risk 2. risked damaging my boat on the rocks/coral leaving me stranded or 3. injured myself pretty badly on corral/rocks or glass while trying to get myself and my boat to safety.

Of course staying out would have put me at risk of getting struck by lightning which if happened would most likely be fatal. But i still wonder what would technically have been the smarter move? Even though very close lightning scares the #$ out of me, I kinda think that technically, staying out on my boat would have been safer then navigating this dangerous route to safety.

I'm hoping others might have opinions - or even past experiences - on this matter.
Cheers
