Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race/ Bigboy Ironman question

Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race

Our race time was 3:09; the newspaper states 3:19 - ?
There was mention of a time penalty for the teams that missed the buoy at the Mokuleas. About a fifth of the boats made the effort to paddle out and turn around that buoy, the rest of the field stayed inside.
Everybody should do the same course and distance.
Does anybody know how this was decided ?

Bigboy Ironman challenge - ocpaddler website has this for 3 weeks from now, the newspaper states that it is this weekend. What is the correct date ? Seems to be Sep 6th:

Any North Palm Beach Paddlers?

I'm looking for information on paddlers / races in the Tequesta / Jupiter area. I currently paddle an OC-1 and 'm intersted in getting together with other paddlers and an OC-6 crew. I know Jupiter had a couple of clubs in the past, and I am told there are a couple OC-6s around, but they seemed to have died out. Any info is appreciated.

Kamaha'o Great Relay Race

I know it's only mid-August, but I wanted to give a heads up about an event our club, Kamaha'o, is organizing for October (the weekend after Molokai Hoe). As it gets closer to the date, I'll post more info in the "Events" section.

WHEN:
October 19, 2008

WHERE:
The Waterfront at Pu’uloa, Ewa Beach, HI
(formerly known as Iroquois Point Island Club)

WHAT:
Join us for our inaugural event! Close out the distance season with an exciting, all-day affair beginning with a three-leg relay race followed by a delicious meal and an awards ceremony. Each paddler who participates will receive a meal ticket and t-shirt. We’ll end the day with a FREE concert starting with an opening act at 3:30 p.m., and then enjoy the beautiful Diamond Head view while listening to the sounds of JOHN CRUZ at 4:30 p.m.

COURSE:
Leg 1: Waterfront at Pu’uloa to Sand Island – 7 mi. – Wahine crews
Leg 2: Sand Island to Magic Island -- 5.5 mi. – Mixed crews
Leg 3: Magic Island to Waterfront at Pu’uloa – 11 mi. – Kane crews

A keiki race is optional depending on interest. This would include 1 mi. and 3 mi. courses at WP beach.

Contact me with any questions, comments, feedback... whatever. More info soon!

Molokai Solo prep

What's a good amount of mileage to put in weekly as you prepare for the Solo over the coming months? When do you start tapering down as the big day approaches? How often is a super long training run advisable?

Shuttle bus at the Liliu'okalani race?

Just wondering if anybody knows about the shuttle bus from the place of refuge back to Kona after the race?

Queen Lili`uokalani race

At last years Queen Liliuokalani kane race Team Livestrong, in a Tahitian design canoe, was the first across the line, but at the awards ceremony Tui Tonga was recognized as the overall winner in a Mirage. Team Livestrong was recognized as the winner of their division, non traditional. I believe this is because KaiOpua is trying to preserve the traditional Hawaiian canoe. If a non traditional canoe crosses the line first this year should it be recognized as the overall winner or should it be Kai`Opua's choice because they host the race?

Question about technique and lower back issues

In the past couple of months I've noticed that my lower back is starting to get sore when I paddle on my OC1. I don't have any issues with my lower back at any other time except from my OC1. I've been paddling for 11 years in OC6 and 3 years on my OC1 and never had this problem before. I am wondering if any of you have encountered the same problem and if there was something about your technique that you found needed to be corrected. Any advise or help you can offer is much appreciated.

Lost Paddle

Howzit,

On Sunday the August 10th, after a 1-man run to Kaimana, I left behind my Black Bart 1 man paddle near the water faucet where we all wash off our canoes.

If you happened to pick it up, please return it. There is no name on it, except a little Black Bart decal, it is all black.
