Fitness Training Video Series

Aloha paddlers!

I just confirmed John Wolf of Wolf Fitness Systems will be doing a 5 part training series for us paddlers. This will be posted on my blog http://koakulture.typepad.com/main/ each month during the "off-season" Nov-April. John specializes in body weight exercises, mobility training, club bell training, and kettle bell training.

My question to you is...What would you like to see or what do you feel is the part you would like to improve? Shoulders? Core? Lower Back? Mobility? This is for the paddlers by the paddlers!

South Pacific Year

I have the fortune of getting to spend a year in the South Pacific learning about outrigger canoes - how to build and paddle them. I'm currently in the Cooks and I'm planning on going to Tahiti, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, and possibly the Marshall Islands (I'm all ears for other locations too). I was wondering if anyone out there was from these places or knows people in them and could introduce me? I am especially looking to contact boat builders, paddlers, and anyone who might have a spare room or couch I can rent to stay while I'm there.

The Cooks are great but there isn't any boat building going on here until November or so, so I'm thinking of heading to Tahiti soon. If anyone out there can help me, feel free to send me an e-mail, krauss.andrew@gmail.com . Kiezo's been a great help so far and suggested that you guys may be able to help out too! Thanks in advance!

Super Atio

Super Aito is August 15 and 16 in Tahiti.
My cousin is going to send me the DVD when it comes out.
If anyone is interested in a copy i'd be happy to get extra (just not happy to illegally copy).
Not sure how much it'll be but normal Tahitian DVD prices.

Turns

Hi there. Been paddling for 2 years and look forward to the Nationals every year. I steer and always need to grab the turns. My number 1 is great, so feel it is I who is failing. I am not the greatest steerer but would like to be!!! Have had advise from top steerers but I just cannot make it stick in my head. Any suggestions?

Technique questions

Most certainly members have covered the following topics, but the search function gives me this:
"Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator."

Ergo, my questions that I haven't seen addressed, in the sites where I've looked so far. I've paddled OC1 only since July5th or so.

  1. distance between hands while paddling: how far? Any minimum? Any maximum? I have moved my lower hand to about 6-8 inches above where the blade starts, and my hand rarely comes into contact with the water. I think I'm ok here.
  2. numbness in leg. In my canoe, (Huki V-1X) paddling with my heels in the bottom of the footwells leads to leg numbness. I pushed the seat back 1-2 inches leaving my heels out of the bottom and the forefeet still able to easily control the rudder--that seemed to keep the numbness away. Anybody else suffer from numbness?
  3. The Switch. On the last stroke before the switch, I thought, well I've already rotated for this stroke, & for the first stroke on the other side, I just rotate a bit more, switch hands & make the catch. I may have been squaring my shoulders and torso during the switch. How do YOU switch?
  4. The lean. Most paddlers I see in videos lean forward to make the catch. Some stay leaned during rotation/pull. Others straighten up. The boats seem to move forward either way. Which is more efficient? Advantages/disadvantages of each? Do we have evidence to prove either as superior?

Thanks in advance.

Koa Kulture -Outrigger Racing Blog

Aloha!

Since im new to this group let me introduce myself to the group. My
name is Mike D. I currently live in Santa Clara, CA and paddle with
PuPu O' Hawai'i out of Santa Cruz/Los Gatos. This year was my 2nd full
year of outrigger paddling and I loved every second of it.

Being semi-new to the sport (uncles paddled for years) I have always
been looking for info on this great sport and the culture surrounding
it. There are alot of great sites and groups that provide info but I
felt that there is more to this sport then event dates and race
results. So I set out to find out these stories.

I will be launching my blog/eZine Koa Kulture this week. In this blog
i will be providing behind the scene interviews, new products, events,
video, and much more. Please stop by and let me know what you would
like to see. This site is in its "beta" stage right now I hope to add
more features and content shortly.

Spread the word!
