Maui nui

Got a few friends doing this race, and they did it last year too. The footage doesn't lie about how much fun These three channels are. Is it just me or do you think this race should have more advertising? So it could get bigger. It's like a mini olamau, there's even cash prize. Just not as much....

There's Been A Lot of Discussion About Tahitian Dominance...

Strategy before tactics.

To build a crew/crews to compete consistently against top Tahitians, Hawai`i-based OC paddling would first need to commit to long-term strategic investment.

Strategy is often embedded in systems; no different in this case. And systems create their own culture. This can result in significant challenges which can result in dislocation or clashes with existing, overlapping cultures.

These might be controversial thoughts-but I am just seeing what people think and know.

Race Coverage and Progress

Able to watch the online feed today, I say props to the coverage team and OCEAN PADDLER TV. The progress made by OCTV has been tremendous! I know they get buckets of feedback during and after the race, and I trust they'll do what paddlers do all the time, and that's try to improve. Guy Hagi and Lauren were entertaining, but only lacked consistent, reliable, accurate information to convey a running narrative of the race. Fortunately, they successfully carried the broadcast along.

So now what?

Steering: A question of balance

This post is for paddles are predominately steer. How do you maintain balance in your body and insure that your basic paddling skills are practiced?

This spring and summer I practiced with our crews, and a few others that lacked a steer, for the World Sprints. I steered almost exclusively from March until August. My coach said I needed to put in my own time, extra, to keep up my paddling skills by getting out in the OC1. But we practiced 5 days a week and I was too exhausted to add more time on the water in the OC1.

Great reach, nice leg drive.... gotta start them young

Cross training

Looking for some ideas and thoughts on cross training. Hands down if I want to make crew again next year I need to get stronger. As the smallest person on my crew, I'm 5'5" and 120 lbs, (the average girl on my crew is about 5'7"-5'8" and 135-140 lbs) I'm at a disadvantage in sheer strength and reach. What I lack in other areas I make up for in surfing ability. I come in near the end of the pack when it comes to two minute one-man pulls in the OC6 but lead the pack when it comes to 10 mile down wind runs on the OC1s and unfortunately one man pulls are a big decision maker for our coach.
