OC1 repair

I recently ran into some reef with my fresh new pueo.....

the hull wasnt hit but the rudder was and it bent and stabbed a huge hole into the bottom of my hull.

Im in Japan and the repair guys are telling me its gonna cost $400 dollars to repair.

A little bit too pricey for me. It's right behind the spot for the rudder. The hole is a little bigger than my thumb.

Any tips on trying to do this myself?

Grip or slip?

OK paddlers, I've failed Search 101 and cannot find a relevant discussion. I'd like to read opinion and fact on whether you prefer your hold on the paddle to be grippy like sticky rubber on hot tar or slippery as after applying sunscreen or Sportglide. (of course, it's not good to let your canoe slip out of your hands and onto the ground!)

A friend says grip, as he says having a slippery hold compels him to actively grab the shaft and paddle grip wasting energy that could go to propelling the canoe. I go with slip, as I have far fewer blisters and calluses and actually think I use less energy--the upper hand lightly holds the grip and I curl the fingers of the lower hand just enough to keep the paddle from flying out. the dynamic force of the stroke keeps the paddle in my hand.

SLIP or GRIP?

Thanks

Results from Hilo

well? does anyone have some results?

How to get started with OC1

I am in SoCal and would like to know if there is any place to rent an OC1. I am between LA and San Diego so can go either way, close to Newport though. I am interested in getting started.
Thanks

what do you look for in a paddle?

I have been dabbling in the paddle making realm for a little over a year now, and have made a few paddles for my club members. I started out making all red cedar with fiberglass over the whole paddle and have been able to get weights in around 16-17 oz per paddle. needless to say some of the novice paddlers completely destroyed these within a couple of months. I have recently recalculated a few things to give them a little more durability especially around the edges for the entry level paddlers. Everyone I have made a paddle for has really had nothing bad to say about them. but I think I could always do better. So present a couple of dumb questions to ask.

My questions are: 1) is weight a major factor in choosing a paddle? 2) Is durability the major factor? 3) what weight is considered a good weight? 4) Should a paddle for regatta racing be different than a paddle used for distance? and 5) What company do you think has the best paddles and why?

I have my own theories on this, but what does the paddling community think about this?

6 man -vs- one man stroke

Is there a diff between the 6man stroke and the 1man stroke? (catch, pull, twist and recovery)

Canoe inflation

So now that Ospreys are in production in China, the Hawaiian made ones - once they start making them again - will be $4600!!! I really hope the other builders dont keep continuing this type of rate increase. The good news is that solved my dilemma on wether to get a Pueo or an Osprey. 6 more weeks!
