Honolulu Advertiser Paddling Blog

Aloha Gang,

The Honolulu Advertiser will SOON have a paddling blog on their website ("Na Leo Hoe Wa'a"), which will be great exposure for the paddling community and sport, itself. Jessie and I don't know EVERYTHING that is going on in the HI paddling community, so if there's something you'd like to see on the blog, shoot me a PM or leave a comment on the blog's site. I can't promise that everything I receive will be written about or addressed, but at least I'll be in the know ;)

US$20,000 prize money for women paddlers at Dubai Shamaal Surfski Race

It may not be parity with the men yet – but that’s what the organisers of the Dubai Shamaal are aiming at: parity in prize money between men & women.

In an effort to kick-start the process, they’ve more than doubled the previously announced prize pool to US$20,000 – US$6,000 for 1st with the cash extending down to 10th position. (Given Lauren Bartlett's brilliant Molokai surfski win, looks like something she might be interested in?)

“It’s up to the women to support us now,” said Wayne Randall, Dubai Surfski and Kayak Club president. “If they up the numbers, we’ll come to the party with the cash. There’s no reason why there shouldn’t be as many women as men in surfski paddling.”

For more, see the story on www.surfski.info

Although the Gulf can kick up challenging conditions – as it did last year – conditions are usually pretty mild and as a consequence the race organisers are expecting many European canoe paddlers to enter the race, attracted by the unprecedented cash on offer.

Anchorman Promotion

If you haven’t already done so, make sure you enter the Dubai Shamaal Anchorman competition – it’s really, really easy – all you need to do is register on surfski.info and answer 3 simple questions about the all black, 8kg Epic V10 Super Elite… The prize for the competition includes:

  • Flights and 5-star accommodation for you and a buddy.
  • Activities like snow skiing in the world’s biggest indoor ski slopes, dune bashing, etc.
  • A $6,000 Epic V10 Super Elite surfski to paddle in the race and then take home…

This prize is valued at around US$20,000 – you cannot miss the chance to win it! The winner will be announced at the end of October.

To enter, go to surski.info: http://www.surfski.info/content/view/785/147/

The promotion runs for another month – and the winner will be announced towards the end of October… Do it, NOW!

$20,000 for 1st Place Men...

$20,000 is the prize money for the 1st place male for the Dubai Shamaal surfski race. The 1st place female will receive $5000. Race Date: December 2nd

"This year the race pays $100 000 and covers the top twenty males & top 3 ladies, masters & Jr paddlers."
http://www.dubaishamaal.com/mr_1_15Jun08.php

Perhaps someone needs to start promoting paddling in Dubai! That prize money sure would help cover the expenses paddlers incur through out the year, from travels cost to dues, escorts, accommodations, the new Pueo, Va'a, Makana Ali'i, Myoplex, Heinekens...

Hotel Rooms for Na Wahine Available

People made arrangements they didn't tell me about and I booked too many rooms at Hotel Molokai. Four are available for Friday night. Two are available for Saturday night. Please PM me if you are interested!

When steersman loose their minds.....

My thought on constantly looking back and driving steersman crazy could be a whole new thread called-“When steersman loose their minds….’ Stories of when steersman go absolutely over the top angry or crazy.

One of my favorite is I had a steersman who was an x-semi pro-surfer and loved to cut it close outside of Diamond Head. After every practice crew would say we are going to get crushed one day. He says no worries I have surfed that break for 14 years I know everypart of it. Well 6-8 foot day and we are sliding around corner of Diamond Head and pounding away and the we hear from the back “Oh Fuc@#” We look left and it is over-16 feet of face looking to kick our ass. Lost two paddles, seat 1 ended up in seat 3’s lap. 5 stiches and steersman says. “That wave shouldn’t have been there.” What? On the other hand steering is super hard and I couldn’t do it. But it was fun story.

I would love to hear more stories of “When steersman loose their minds….”

PooPooPaddler is so gracious that he has allowed me to start a thread, but he better tell a story. No holding back.

PPpaddler is the most gracious of all posters and has a heart of gold. It is so sad that he is often a victim of blatant and systematic discrimination just because of his name. I can see teasing someone because they wear a tight shirt, eat vegemite, or don't spell well (me). That is a choice. But people don't have control of what they are named.
