Coast Guard Canoe Race

Do you know how old you have to be to race it? because i really want to race it next year. i would race it this year, but i don't think i've had enough one man experience to do it. And can oc1s do changes too?

Thanks,
kcchee11

search function

since the search function seems to be down, here's what you can do

just do a google seach and add "site:ocpaddler.com" after search item

example:
lightning site:ocpaddler.com

there's alot of info, rumors, nonsense, and fights that would be a shame not to revisit

Lost Steering Blade Molokai

Lost Makana Steering blade just off of La'au point (reddish composite blade). If found please contact Al Streck (808) 852-8662. Means alot to owner and I am sure he would show his gratitude in one way or another :D!

Night paddling light and compass....please advise...

since the search function is out I was hoping I could get a little advice.

1) Lights. I am just talking about within harbor inside the breakwater. So I have the super water proof mountaineering headlamp (like a coal miners), check. Is there something like a little velcro/suctioncup battery light I could stick on the front of my canoe...just something to delineate the front of my canoe not to illuminate the water. I think with that and my dork headlamp I am good. The paddleboarder use just a headlamp

2) Compass. It is amazing that garmin has such a hard time making a waterproof case. My e-trex bit the dust after just a few uses. The bouncing speedometer was worthless and it was hard to see, and well since it flooded just getting splashed I am glad to be rid of it. My coworker got a 305 for biking and after one rainy race, it died too. Amazing. So I can figure my speed pretty well with my good old 30 casio g-shock and my know routes. Though it is doubtful I would need it I would like a really tough magnetic compass I could see in the low light. Any product suggestion?

again, sorry if this is old hat but the search is out. I'll give google a try too.
Thanks
Shawn

Rules Regarding Riding Wake In Moloka'i Hoe

Just watched the canoes come in from Daimond Head.

I'm curious, what are the rules in regards to riding wakes in the Moloka`i Hoe? Obviously, riding one's own escort boat wake is prohibited; but what about other boats, specifically, non-escort boat wakes?

Pueo

Just some short points about the Pueo for those of you that are interested. I had a chance to paddle the boat in
Kailua Bay, Pinky's canal.

what I liked:
- very good glide in flat water - competitive with the Hurricane
- very well balanced - the ama comes up with every stroke, yet the boat does not feel tippy.
- single foot well - comfortable
- seat, Fusion style - comfortable
- set up - ama easy to attach, three snaps and one screw - very well done
- very responsive steering - even on the waves the boat goes easily right and left
- very easy take off downwind
- didn't feel the ama

anything to improve ?
- the boat felt light - actually 18 lbs. For me a little more weight would be fine. This particular boat did not have the new and slightly heavier core material yet.
- while surfing downwind the boat takes off very well, but you need to keep paddling for max efficiency. It's not like a Zephyr that runs on it's own once it's going. A question of mass ?
- I know it's not realistic due to material cost and labor: it would be nice if all OC 1s could be offered at lower prices.
Maybe a fiberglass layup with a real thick core and less high tech materials overall could be an option.
- it is not a high volume boat; I weigh about 205/210, no problems though.
- the foot well should be placed according to customer needs - tall, average, small. I felt that I was sitting slightly behind the sweet spot; Kamanu composites is considering this feature for the future.

Afterwards, I went to the factory and had a look: very impressive, this is serious business. One of the hulls was being prepared for layup. It had a new core material, really nice stuff, probably 8 - 9 mm thick, and stiff. Nice tooling, all professional grade. Waiting time for a boat is 3 1/2 months at this time. Three different prices according to layup/core material used.

After paddling a variety of boats in the recent past I can assure you: it's not the engine, it's the boat ! :).

Tommy Connor's Striker and this Pueo are my current favorites.

I remain loyal to the Fusion when it get's big - the further out we paddle, the more I appreciate that boat's sturdiness.

PS: Goodwaka, keep your rudderless stuff, go get yourself a ....... :)

Molokai Hoe race day channel updates

Ok gang, update number one - the winds are 10-20, nice swells, partly cloudy.

The race just started about 5 minutes ago..WHY SO LATE YOU ASK? There was a false start !!!!!! YES, the officals made everyone turn around and go back to the starting line. I am not sure who false started at this point but some canoes were about a 1/4 mile into it. Alex is in the helo filming, and we have 2 media boats running with Dolan and Hugh filming, they will have on film who did what. At this point I don't want to give you false (please dont mind the pun) information. So for now.."someone" false started is all I can say for sure! You can imagine what that must have been like for the crews. Hearts racing, paddles hitting...then to be told "hey turn around and lets do this again"..Needless to say WOW.

It's only 5 minutes into it, but shell is in the front, followed by Lanikai.

I will try to update you every hour..Reception gets weird but I will do my best and will try to give you the top 5 boats.

AWESOME SO FAR and super exciting..The weather is perfect for a good race. There are trades, we expect them to pick up a little as the day goes on. WOW..UNREAL. I am sure when they get into the channel it is going to be a blast. The winds have been blowing 10-20 for a few days. Some of the escort guys told me they got the crap beaten out of them on their way to Molokai to escort. I will have more information at 9:00am...You guys do know I am not a writer, so dont tease me..I dont even have spell check right now.

THE RACE IS ON BABY:):)
