What is the function of coaches in OC paddling ?

Please do not misunderstand this question; I once read a comment about surfing: " if you want to know about surfing, go out and surf".
There is a lot of truth to that. Is paddling like that, too ?

In paddling you do not hear too much either; " reach out and twist, blend - ... and ... time on the water".

Is that it ? I am helping out with the youth program. Should you just let them paddle and have them find their own technique ?

do any of you guys know whats gonna happen for tomorrow cuz i heard someone already smashed their boat doing a race course practice run this week.

With six man season just around the corner for many of us, I was just wondering how clubs from around the world select their crews when race day comes. Time trial, coaches decision, favoritism? How does your gang do it? I was especially curious about the Top Tahitian teams if anyone is tuning in down there...

Howzit everyone! I have a paddle that I want to shorten. How do I properly take off the top? Any suggestions?

What is better hot hydration or cold as in chilled?
I had a question for Rambo about his liquid intake when he did the crazy long distance. During that race it was 45 Celsius = 113 Fahrenheit.
He had to switch to cold drinks to make it bearable. Desert people live in the same hot condition and often prefer hot tea to "cool" down. It pushes blood to the skin, you sweat, evaporation happens, it cools you down.
For me "room temperature" ( as in whatever it is at the time of the race) seems the least interruptive. The cold stuff makes it hard to down and feels like it tightens your windpipe, also it seems your system has to divert energy from cooling to heating the chilled beverage for digestion.
Personal preference is huge of course, but does anyone have any knowledge about optimal temperature for hydration during racing ?

On the other hand I'm planning to have a hot chocolate half-way into the Catalina Challenge if it's cold.

I live on Kauai and will be in Southern California for 4 weeks, starting the last week in January. At least one of those weekends I'd like to hook-up with some one and paddle. Does anyone have any club contacts in the Santa Monica or Marina Del Rey area that would welcome a stranger to fill a seat in an OC-6 or, God forbid, an OC-1?

Here's last saturdays race in Santa Barbara. The first of 2008 in the SoCal Winter Series. Still technical difficulties in the vid dept., and working on that. Nice day, flat as your basic tortilla.
As you can see I used the conditions to refine my shameless drafting. Heck, it made me so fast that my visuals arrive right now before the race results. Also I didn't chine one bit during the whole race and still didn't beat Danny ;-)
