Paddling Cadence

I was watching our local club paddle the other day and noticed they had a very fast cadence, stroke per minute. To me it looked a bit too fast and seemed like they couldn't possibly be getting any power out of their strokes.

So here's the question: What is the optimal stroke per minute rate that allows for the most power to be put behind the stroke? Not sure if that can be answered and I know it's different for each person, but I'm curious.

I guess I'm wondering if someone looks like they are getting 90 strokes per minute are they actually wasting energy and not producing a powerful stroke?

monavie

aloha, fellow paddlers. are any of you out there drinking monavie? i've been drinking it since my co-worker (she's a physical therapist) turned me on to it. its pure acai juice, mixed with 19 other fruits very high in antioxidant power. you take two shots a day (like wheat grass). i hate to sound like one of those crazy people, but my neck pain is GONE. i'm a nurse and i'm really skeptical about things like this. i'm all about proven science. but, i'm hooked on this stuff. i'll be bringing the bottle to the maliko race tomorrow and giving shots to my crew. google acai and monavie. pretty interesting. leslie

Training: Rest to Work Ratio for Sprint Training

Can anyone provide some guidelines for how much rest I should have between work sets on the water? Is this best determined by heart rate, or are there guidelines for work to rest ratio when training aerobic, aerobic power, anaerobic? Pointers to good resources are also welcome...

I have some notes from a class that indicate a 1:5 work to rest ratio when training anaerobic at full intensity. Can that be right!?!

For example, if working on a series of sprints at 100% intensity, 90 seconds each, how much time should I take in between to recover if I do very easy paddling in between, or if I stop and rest entirely?

If Alan C is out there, this one sounds right up his alley for an answer!

Thanks,
V

What does everyone think of the Nohokai Racks OC1 Wall Rack?

Stopped by Island Paddler today and saw the Nohokai OC1 wall racks there. I was wondering if anyone else out there uses these racks as oppose to the racks from Home Depot. I have read in other posts that the Home Depot rack (since it is "L" shaped) will dent my boat. The Nohokai racks seem to fit better. Any suggestions?

Research paper

Hi,

I'm doing a school research paper on the sport of paddling in general and would like some feedback. I just have some questions that you can answer or comment on in whatever manner you choose. Keep in mind that it is a research paper and if I decide to use your answer then I will cite it properly using your username or real name if you decide to include it. You can either post it or email me your answers to midamax20@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance for taking the time.

  1. What got you involved in the sport?
  2. What are the pros and cons about paddling?
  3. Does Hawaii have a good paddling program, meaning sponsors, races, state assistance, etc... and if not who does?
  4. What does the future of the sport look like in your opinion?
  5. Has the sport changed any, if so for better or worse?
  6. Any other comments you might want to add.

did anyone lose a pegasus?

If you lost a pegasus anywhere in Hawaii recently or even in the past 6 months. One washed up on Kaua'i. Please call Butch at [number removed] asap -- trying to eliminate a coast guard search.

Super Aito

I saw a link around here somewhere to the Super Aito results in Tahiti but can't find it anymore. I saw that Lewis Laughlin won the overall race. That makes him Molokai Solo champion on a surfski and Super Aito champ on a rudderless canoe. My guess is that this is unprecedented.

I'd love to hear more about the races from anyone who was there. The pictures on the website looked amazing.

Short Course racing

How many middle and back of the pack paddlers out there would want the option to have a shorter course in OC-6 Racing? One thing I have seen in our sport is the lack of options for paddlers that do not have the time or desire to train for the long distance, Or they are just not good enough athletes to compete in the longer distances. Sucessful sports need to have options, Triathlons, Running, even golf are so popular because there are options for everyone. With the exception of sprints, there are few options for paddlers that want to race in open ocean conditions at distances that are better suited for the "weekend warrior" or paddler that spends a few days a week on his OC-1, or goes out with the club but never improves.
I have seen a stigma attached to short course racing in OC-1 racing here in So Cal, that needs to stop if we want the OC-1 races to grow, I think the same is true for OC-6 racing to keep the clubs from loosing so many novice after just one year. We should be more concerned with getting paddlers on the water and keeping them there than we are about how far they race.

seat position

i'm new to the sport and i've been branded "a 1,2 or 5" what would this be based on? size, strenght, technique, what?
