Liberty Registration Now Open

Just wanted to let everyone know that registration is now open for the Liberty World Outrigger Competition. This year celebrates the 15th anniversary of the race and we expect a large field of international crews to attend.

Liberty includes two 15 mile races (men’s and women’s) and an 11 mile mixed race. All races are iron.

Any crews from out of town in need of a canoe are strongly encouraged to register early, as we make boats available on a first come, first served basis.

Lots of info on the race is available on our website: http://www.newyorkoutrigger.org/liberty.php

Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai race pictures

I have set up a website with photos from the last ten years of the Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai races. They are available for sale from the website, with the nominal profit from the sale going to the race organizations to help defray the costs of putting on the races, and ultimately benefitting the paddlers and clubs participating in these great events.

I am a physician who has committed (for life!) to helping keep the races safe.

I look forward to seeing all of you through the lens, and not in the back of a Medical Boat!

Enjoy the pictures.

Anybody got Pa'a 'Eono details?

Based on rumors and the poster posted in events, it looks like the Paa Eono Hoe is now 2 days, Maui to Molokai on Saturday and Molokai to Oahu on Sunday. Sounds like lots of fun! Can anybody provide any more details? That post is from a month ago and the only thing on the Paa website is the canoe classification guidelines.

V1 Paddling - Strokes & Speed (?).

Aloha to All,

I was reading the article "A Ruderless Revolution" on Pacific Paddler Magazine and I'm curious about the five (5) different types of V1 strokes taught by Manutea Owen and Georges Cronsteadt and mentioned by Ron Cotteen.

I'm just a V1 rookie but the ones that were taught to me were:

  1. Front Draw (towards the hull);
  2. Back Draw;
  3. J Stroke;
  4. Poke;

Could anyone pls clarify?
