Nappy's glasses lost and found in reef wipeout

Carrying on from the awesome Bamski lost and found thread is this gem about Nappy's little altercation with a Cook Islands reef break during the recent Vaka Eiva iron race last week.

Nappy steering, took a close line looking for a run advantage and uncharacteristically wiped out on the reef. I was shooting video from the media boat and caught some of the action, but had to drop the cameras to pull Big Sam and a fellow Anueanue crew member into the boat and in the process we took a huge hit ourselves with the wave breaking over the top of the media boat. Nappy, the canoe and the rest of the crew were washed over the reef and made it safely to the beach where they retrieve the canoe and paddled inside the reef to return to the finish line.

Nappy's new prescription sunglasses were lost in the wipe-out (about 200 metres from shore) and finding them seemed a impossible task............ Enter one of Nappy's best Aussie Mates Johnny Stewart from Outrigger Australia Club. 24 hrs after the event, unknown to Nappy, Johnny decided to take a snorkel, mask and Nappy's wife Anona back to the location, as Anona had a fix on the reef area where the incident happened as she was watching from a vantage point on the beach. After an hour of searching in 10ft deep water, Johnny returned to shore and realised it was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Suddenly, something moved Johnny to walk further down the beach to search some more and he had just walked knee deep into the water when he spotted something, yep it was Nappy's glasses.

Johnny and Anona decided they would play a little joke on Nappy when returning the glasses to him. Johnny sat down with Nappy to have a coffee wearing Nappy's glasses and made the comment that he should try the new glasses that he was wearing to read the menu, Nappy put them on and made the comment " GEE JOHNNY, WE MUST HAVE SIMILAR EYES, THESE GLASSES ARE JUST LIKE MINE " ( not thinking that they could possibly have been his) confused, he handed them back and Johnny suggested" WHY DON'T YOU KEEP THEM NAPPY, AS YOU LOST YOURS YESTERDAY" Nappy being the perfect gentlemen declined the offer and over the next few minutes the glasses were shoved back and forwards across the table until Johnny finally had to tell Nappy the unbelievable story of how he had found them. Needless to say, Nappy was stoked.

Over the next few days of racing, Nappy would repeatedly say to me, "RAMBO, I'M SORRY I COULD NOT OFFER YOU MORE EXCITING ACTION TO FILM, NO MORE WIPEOUTS,.... we both laughed.

Cheers Rambo

(I also did a few interviews with Nappy ... will be online soon)

Old OC1's

What happens to old OC1's.
I just purchased a real oldie for next to nothing. This one won the Hamo in it's time...so I am told:-)
I love my canoes and do not like to part with them unless they are going to a good home, but they do take up space and collect dust
Novice paddlers can borrow the oldie. It will keep them off the "good boat"
So what has happened to all those old rowing boat hulls that were made into OC1's .. you know the ones. They were too long to legally fit on roof racks..unless you drove a train or a very large truck. They were ok for flat water only... and expensive.

And now that racing has gone all carbon fibre lightweight..what happens to all those fibreglass heavish craft.
Do they become Club boats?
When I was in Tahiti, I saw lots of discarded Va'a sitting in back yards. Heck there were grave yards of OC6 sitting on some beaches.
Do any of you guys still own an oldie?

Newbie questions

Does one set the rear iako a different depth into the ama depending on conditions? Also I have a klunking sound in the body of the hull while i'm paddling. It's the same sound as when you bottom out the iakos into the hull. The iakos are tight so I can't figure out where it's coming from? This is on a Zephyr....

Seeking female paddlers- Oahu

Hi everyone…
Totally not the norm here, but I am looking for female OC-1 paddlers for consideration for an HMSA commercial spot.
You will receive compensation if you are selected. HMSA is a sponsor for our Moloka’i to Oahu canoe races and they are focusing on that sport for some upcoming campaigns.

This is a good thing for our sport and our upcoming races. If you are a female age 18-25 years old and you are an avid paddler and are interested in this, please email me: nazarene@adragency.com.

I am the Event Director for the Moloka’i Hoe and assist with the Na Wahine and in my “real” job I am an agent for television and film, and I wanted to give anyone who is interested a shot at this…I need to hear from you by Wed. 11/26/08.

mahalo for entertaining this…a hui hou

Hostility

Dudes and dudettes, whats up with all the hostility on OCP lately? Even I, poopoopaddler, am surprised that the level this has taken. It makes me want to break into poetry..

OCP, despite its funk
is a great place to come
even though some are punks
ask a question, it will be answered
a good response
or get completely hammered
goto, dodge those flying darts
Fuzerider, always trying to make a buck
but all you get are stinky farts
debmaui trying to rent a place
shawn michaels please for the love of god use your legs
Otherwise get used to the dirt in your face
Aquafiend, you can suck it and suck it good
Jibofo, pantieur sometime we need to have a beer
I think Rambo is possibly from the hood
Bamskii you lucky son of a bitch
I still can't believe the whole story
Losing your ring the day after you get hitched
to all you haters giving flack
Relax cause or else
OCP mafia will have you whacked

You get pretty creative after a few beers.

Across Bass Strait in an OC6

In March next year a team of Aussie outriggers will paddle an OC6 canoe across Bass Strait from the southern most tip of mainland Australia to Tasmania to raise money to aid in cancer research and to honour two men. This will be the first outrigger canoe to make the crossing.

My good mate Peter Corbishley has been building racing outrigger canoes in Australia for the past 20 years, he has made over 300 OC6 canoes and approx. 95% of the OC6 canoes being raced in Australia today were built by Peter. He has made an enormous contribution to the sport here in Australia. After making canoes for many years in his factory in the Whitsundays near Hamilton Island Peter moved his operation down to Tweed Heads and it was here he finally picked up a paddle and began training and competing in the sport he has contributed so much to.

Earlier last year Peter was diagnosed with Non Hodgkinsons T-Cell Lymphoma a rare and terminal form of skin cancer. As a sign of respect and to honour Peter's contribution to the sport the plan is to paddle with Peter in one of the canoes he has made across Bass Strait. Peter will be part of the crew to raise awareness for cancer and to raise money in aid of Cancer research and to also prove that there is life after diagnosis.

The trip is also being made in honour of Chris Robinson, a paddler and world renowned Greenpeace skipper and activist who sadly lost his battle with cancer this year. Chris devoted his life to protect the oceans from whaling activities, nuclear testing and exploitation. He learnt his skills in Bass Strait and participated in campaigns to give the Bass Strait Islands protected status. Chris was to be the skipper of the support vessel for the crossing. We will be joined for the crossing by his niece Prue Robinson also a champion paddler. For more information about Chris visit http://www.greenpeace.org/chris

We are going to try and raise as much money as we can for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) and this is where we need every bodies help. If you would like to make a donation fantastic. Also please let as many people as you can know about the crossing who you think would like to sponsor us. Think of people who work for big corporations or have friends or family that do. Big companies sometimes have special funds set up for these kinds of things. If you have any ideas about getting sponsors please share them with me. Think of your own clubs and their existing sponsors, think big, anybody associated with the sport in any way.

I have created a web/blog site that has all the information on the trip including sponsorship options. We'll use this site to update our fund raising progress leading into the trip and then keep everyone posted as we make our way across Bass Strait. The address is:

http://crossingforcancer.blogspot.com/

Rambo will be joining us to film the crossing and we'll hopefully make a small documentry about the trip.

If you would like more information about the tip or can think of a way to help please let me know.

Cheers
