Newbie Update

Today is my birthday, 53 woohoo! so I played hookie to go paddle! Another S.D. bay run south to the end of the bay. 7.2 miles one way from my starting point, 1hour 14 minutes on my return run. Since it was creamy smooth rollers I pulled the back iako up a couple inches from bottoming in the ama. I didn't know if that makes a difference but it was a gorgous day so I was feeling more confident.
Couple of questions: I must add a 1/4 of a mile to my point to point just from zig-zagging! I concentrating on my stroke looking down then I look up and I'm headed 30 degrees in another direction! I'm always correcting.
What watch is the best to wear. I'm looking at Suuntos but which one, just want to keep easier track of my time. Thanks

New project: Build V6

Newbie questions

I am on month # 2 of paddling, I've got me a OC zephyr which is a great canoe, great job OC guys! Questions: Is paddling a OC6 the same as an OC1 as far as paddle position goes etc? I watch these videos and see the OC6 guys and gals with the classic high hand above the head for the catch, and the OC1 guys look like there are not even working hard as they are motoring along. I paddle with an old vetran that also has a Zephyr and I'm working my ass off just to stay with him and he's just crusing! I don't tire, it's just frustrating watching videos and him not working hard and I'm going balls to the walls! I do 3.6 miles in a choppy bay in 35 minutes, is that good, average or slow? I've watched Johnny P and the Danny chinn videos on technique and I think I'm doing it right? I've noticed I'm much more comfortable paddling on the left side vs. the right, I'm left handed, I don't know if that makes a difference, any way, any help would be appriciated, Thanks!!

First Aussie Va'a

The First of many Aussie Va'a (yep it has a cockpit and no rudder it's genuine Polynesian) has just hit the water.
Now we have the capacity to build canoes, I'm predicting Va'a Racing in Australia will explode if the current interest is any guide.
First time I've seen one in the raw without all the wild colour schemes and I'm really impressed with the visual lines of this Va'a, it looks fast. My turn to test paddle this weekend.

Hawaiki Nui

Hows it Hiro...

Big week next week. What's the haps in Tahiti right now? Anything big being planned for Hawaiiki Nui?? Hows the press down there, Shell all the way?? Any talk on Team Hawaii coming down?

Must be exciting. I bet the entire country gearing up for Hawaiiki Nui. If someone was planning on going down to experience the race, what would you commend one do to get the full experience of Hawaiki Nui?? (besides following all the legs in a poti marara).

Mahalo Brah....Jaws Out.
