Cook Islands Voyaging Canoe

The Voyaging canoe Te Au o Tonga restoration is finally complete. The Vaka with a crew of 12 left this morning to sail from Rarotonga to Pago Pago in American Samoa .. for those of you that are interested in some culture that is part of our sport, you can follow the trip on their web site http://www.voyaging.co.ck as well as facts & gps data there is a photo library ... I'll be back in Raro next week for a month (life's tough) & will be out on the ocean to welcome the Vaka home at the end of July, I intend to use a chase boat & shoot some cool stuff for postcards etc. to help with fundraising & hopefully I'll get a sail to the outer islands as well !!!! ... I'll post some pics & stories on the ausoutrigger site for those interested,.... and will be including the Vaka in my next book of course ! .... Harv

Technique ?'s

I'm new here and to OC1 paddling. I went to http://www.outriggercanoe.blogspot.com/ but cannot seem to view the videos posted there by Mindy esp the one titled
"Johnny Puakea and Danny Ching
Paddling Clinic at the Kamanu Factory
"Breaking Your Arms"

My OC paddle friend advises me to keep the upper arm straight, though he didn't seem to do so himself & I have seen a whole range of configurations for the both arms on youtube, etc. What's on that video?

During Monday's (7/14) session on the water, I produced more power on the left side than on the right (GPS use) & using the same technique with the blade on the right felt muscles I didn't think I had. Even a slower cadence didn't seem to detract from the speed once I had a good catch. Interestingly, if I permitted the blade to move away from the hull up to 10", I had as much or more power and it felt more natural to do so with my lower arm pretty much straight. On some strokes, I might even sneak forward on my seat a bit with mostly upright posture to get a little more stroke length and slide back as the blade reached the middle of its pull phase of the stroke. Is this an inefficient variation of "proper" OC1 paddling technique? does the blade need to stay close to the hull throughout the the pull phase?

Another event with my new (to me) boat included the ama leaving the water while stroking on the right. I didn't huli, but found it interesting. Thanks in advance for comments.

Foot falls asleep

I've been paddling oc-1 for about a month. Got a used Honu fot a good price. I usually paddle about an hour or 2 at a time. My problem is that my left foot falls asleep about every half hour and I have to stop and get the circulation back. Could I be leaning too far to the left of the boat? If I go exactly in the center, I have a tendency to huli. I replaced the seat(it was 1/4"thick and hurt me booty), and I can fair it down some more.

"Bury the blade from the side" for a good catch? Differnces between OC-1 and 6 man

I have been trying to focus on getting my catch as far forward as I can. After seeing a video of myself paddling even though I thought I was doing a great job I am starting my stroke before the blade is buried.
On the vid below (thanks to mindy's blog) the coach talks about burying the blade from the side to get a forward catch:

http://s1.video.blip.tv/1030000345113/Mindy-LearningTheOutriggerStrokeWi...

Is the 6 man teaching good for OC-1 or are the two strokes different (eg longer in OC-1 vs 6 man) and comment on "bury the blade from the side" for helping to get that forward catch?

Many thanks for your help!
Shawn

Anyone have a great OC-1 Picture they can post/link?

I have seen many great 6 man photos of boats cresting huge waves, great photos of surfskies punching through huge sets but nothing really great of OC-1. Anyone? Until the still far off day I can be doing it, need something inspirting for the desktop or wall.

Many thanks!
Shawn
