Stroke for Paddling Upwind in Rough Conditions

Aloha,

Today we had a practice that was in rough conditions; upwind. I sat stroker. Our other crews pulled out in front of us and we basically fell behind. My question is this: All things being equal, what is the best stroke (if there is one) for these conditions? What do you think would be best based on your experience?

Mahalo for any insight.

What's the correlation...

This question has been nagging at me all season: what is the correlation between speed in an OC1 and power in the OC6?

We have a two or three paddlers who consistently come in slow in our time trials in the OC1's. However they insist that they pull more water when in an OC6.

So, what gives? Can it be true that someone slow in an OC1 (not a rookie, though) can be a big gun in an OC6?

Sprints?

love em or leave em?
now that July is here, curious of the collective appetite for these races.

Outrigger Club in Italy?

Going to travel to Rome in July, anyone know of any outrigger club I can paddle with in Italy?

What's the best oc6?

Aloha gang...a friend of mine is starting a club in North Carolina and they want to purchase three new canoes. What should they get? Are unlimited wa'a available for such purchase?

V-1 TAHITI MEN'S OPEN

431 va'a at the start!!!.Kevin Ceran-Jerusalemy wins, leading from start to finish, but race is not ratified by the federation due to a mess at the start,va'a not being properly aligned.

Molokai Hoe Start

I think I read somewhere (I could be wrong) that the Molokai Hoe start may move to Kaunakakai due to various issues around access to Hale O Lono Harbor. Is this just rumor or does anyone have information?

Where to 'step' on stroke, when to steer

Hey All,

Total noob on the the 1-man, but picking things up as I go.

Question, regarding the leg drive on the stroke. Should pressure be applied to the heels, pushing on the steering paddles only if necessary, or should pressure be applied through the whole foot (with both feet) and 'balancing' out the pressure on the steering paddles (but putting strain on the cable).

Question regarding steering. I sense that the steering is more stable during the stroke, so I usually do it here, and let it ride on it's own during recovery....but not sure if this is correct technique?

"Sleepy" Leg

Question - been trying out a few OC1's and regardless of canoe, my left leg goes numb pretty fast. Like painfully fast. I was out yesterday and it happened again. I thought it was because the ama wasn't 'heavy' enough. Being still very new I'm still nervous about huli. This was a Storm so super light. I figured I was leaning left to much, so the adjustment to the ama would allow me to sit more straight up and new lean my hips to the left.

Felt better for a short time, then still the left leg fell asleep. When that happens I can't steer.

Respect

Yesterday my dad set out the new gunnels for Honolulu Pearls canoe that he had been rebuilding for the past couple of years. Putting on the gunnels is one of the last steps before painting. When he got back to his place, he realized that someone had stolen all the Koa that he laid out. This is the canoe that picked up the wave at the end of the novice race in the Nanakuli regatta and crashed onto the beach. It basically blew apart. Koa canoes are what our ancestors used to fish, travel, play, etc. in. It’s part of our heritage and where we come from culturley in Hawaii.
