molo solo coverage

i'm really impressed with the way that the surfski community is covering the solo.. current race updates, profiles, strategies, seeding... kind of like a real sporting event instead of a niche sport...it may be that this is a new thing for them also, but it's good.

see www.surfski.info (link on the solo website)... don't know if it has to do with the new organizer (chalupsky and epic), and his high profile, or that the surfski community is more savvy, but the oc1 and oc6 race community can learn some lessons, considering that we're a larger group (as far as i know.. could be wrong)... right now we get a preview article in the advertiser or starbulletin (maybe) and an article with the results, and maybe a post here at ocpaddler.. and that's in hawaii, in the mainland, there's really nothing except occasional race stories after the fact from different sites (al ching at mudbrook, or scora, or mindy's video blogs)

look at how surfing now has live webcasts of the ASP events, which get more coverage and allow them to have it in prime surfing locations, but still allow the sponsors to get exposure.. instead of huntington pier, we have cloudbreak and teahupoo..everyone wins.

Boat Speed

I am a realitively new OC-1 paddler. I live in the Toronto (Canada) area and do my paddling on lake Ontario. From what I can tell the conditions I paddle in are similiar to the East Coast of the States and also the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida. All of the local races are out and back course, very few down wind races. I have been reviewing the race results on the OCPADDLER website but it's difficult to compare my conditions to these race conditions. My question is.... how fast do I need to be to be competitive in the masters division. Currently I am able to average between 9.5 km/hr and 10.5 km/hr (5.8 and 6.4 miles/hr) depending on conditions during a good training run...... any input would be greatly appreciated

Full contact racing.

Anybody know what exactly happened at the San Diego Crystal Pier OC-6 race, where one open men's canoe tried to cut another in half, but could only get their bow three feet through the other canoe?

Billy Whitford

Does anyone have an email or phone contact for Billy Whitford?

How do you store your canoe?

Hi,

Can you guys tell me how you store your canoes? I've been wanting to get an OC-2 for a long time, but don't know where to put it because they are so long. The shortest canoe I've found is about 25 feet long, which is too long for my garage.

It might fit in my backyard, but it would be pretty awkward. Would a tarp be sufficient to protect it or is it better to build something?

Thanks for your help!

Albert
