Kaimana by John Puakea (Hawaii) and Holo Nui by HYPR (China)

Kaimana by John Puakea (Hawaii) and Holo Nui by HYPR (China)

It was recently announced that HYPR Canoes (manufactured in China) has a container of one-man outrigger canoes (OC-1) scheduled to arrive in Europe this April. This announcement indicated that this shipment would include the Kaimana OC-1 by John Puakea of Hawaii. This statement is fundamentally inaccurate.

Kaku Designs and John Puakea endorse the worldwide growth of OC-1. The emergence of a market in Europe for our Hawaiian sport is both wonderful and significant. However, it is important to distinguish that the Holo Nui, a HYPR design, is fundamentally different from the Kaimana by John Puakea.

To learn more about the Kaimana, and other hand-crafted Kaku Designs built by John Puakea in Haleiwa, Hawaii please visit http://www.kakudesigns.com.

          Respectfully,

Tip on Icing

Since everybody is training so hard I thought I'd share this.
I got this from Ray the West Coast Paddle-Chiro.
Take a freezer bag or one of those blue rubber ice bags and fill it not only with water but add about 20% of Alcohol and toss that into the freezer. The alcohol keeps the water from freezing solidl and you get a slush pack that fits snug to the body. By the time you are supposed to ease off it is melting already. Throw it back into freezer and reuse.
I've used the same 2 bags almost daily since February. No prep, ready to use, no waste of water!
You can use Isopropyl or denatured alcohol, but why not use good-natured alcohol. I personally prefer Bombay Gin. Works the same way but has a more pleasant aroma at the point when the bag gets a litlle older and some juice leaks through the seal as it nestles cozily on my shoulder.
Try your favorite alcoholic beverage in your ice bag and report back to me.

SLUSH ADJUSTMENTS/TROUBLE SHOOTING:

slush too slushy= too much alcohol in the bag.
Solution: Take a generous swig and add more water to the bag. (that’s where your decision to use good-natured alcohol pays of handsomely)
slush too frozen= not enough alcohol in the bag.
You drank too much! Remember slush, not lush! Now go water the flowers and start anew.

I just shot some trouble an ‘m almost habing do deplare an emerency. 1mo shlush adschussment blease.

Chillin' here!

Blackburn Challenge

Each year in July there is a race called ” Blackburn Challenge ” in Massachusetts. The race course circumnavigates Cape Ann. If you have google earth, or other earth viewing software , you can view the entire race course. The course is 24 miles or so long and almost circular , on protected river and open ocean. Since the course is circular, every wind and wave direction will be encountered during the event.

In recent months , here on this blog there has been a lot of discussion about boat performance , OC1s` in particular. Ive been thinking that maybe the Blackburn Challenge race would be a good place to gather usefull information to solve the question:
“Whats a good boat for east coast conditions".

Who wins the race wont necessarily settle the question because as we all know , it`s the motor that counts and the truth is, the real winner is he or she that is having the most fun.

However , I believe that if a large number of OC1 paddlers show up to race at the Blackburn this July , we will be able to glean at least some averages as to which boat/paddler combinations work well in east coast conditions.

Dont miss the Blackburn this year , its going to be a ton of fun, luau, beer , awards at the finish and Karel Tresnak Jr. to race with. It doesn`t get any better!

Iron vs. switching paddlers

I'm relatively new to outrigger paddling (my background is in flatwater K1 and surf ski) and was wondering if someone could enlighten me as to why some races are "iron" and some allow the switching in and out of paddlers from a support boat? Were early races all "iron"? How did the concept of the switching of paddlers develop.

Thanks for any schooling on the history of this...

Stu Kalama Race

Anyone have results for last Saturday's race. It was a fun event, but there were no results or times available at the site until late in the day.
