Kanaka Ikaika race #4 potential change

Kanaka Ikaika Lulu’s Series race #4 course adjustments

Due to impending southwest winds, the course for this Sunday’s Kanaka Ikaika race #4, February 24 may be reversed so that the long course start would be Sand Island and the finish in Hawaii Kai. Short course will still start at Kaimana Beach no matter what, South Swell pending, and finish at Hawaii Kai (if course reverses). Registration will remain at Hawaii Kai. Due to these variables, please come early to registration and we’ll make the final course decision on Sunday morning.

Academic study of Polynesian canoes

News release:

Abstract and link to full text

From the news release:

``Scientists at Stanford University have shown for the first time that
cultural traits affecting survival and reproduction evolve at a different
rate than other cultural attributes. Speeded or slowed rates of evolution
typically indicate the action of natural selection in analyses of the
human genome.

This study of cultural evolution, which compares the rates of change for
structural and decorative Polynesian canoe-design traits, is scheduled
to appear Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the online Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.

..

But Nina Jablonski, chair of the Anthropology Department at Pennsylvania
State University, said she is sold on the research. "This paper is
revolutionary in its approach ... one of the most significant papers to
be written in anthropology in the last 20 years," she said.''

Seeking Lance Mamiya

G'day from Australia.
I am wondering if anyone knows Lance Mamiya in California or Hawaii. I paddled with him in Tahiti in 06 and have tried to contact him but have had no luck with his old email adress,
I know that he did the Molokai solo last year and was wondering if he was going again this year ?
I am planning on coming over to do it and would like to meet up with him again, so any info regarding his whereabouts or any help in regard to finding a support boat and a Canoe (preferably Pegasus ) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kevlon

Tahitian Paddling Calendar 2008

It can be found here.
http://www.vaatahiti.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=292&I...

for non french/tahitian-speaking/reading...
- first column shows the date : day/month/year.
- the second is the name of the race.
- third shows the type of race : va'a ho'e = V1, va'a toru = V3, va'a ono = V6, va'a tau'ati = V12 or V16, vitesse = short distance sprint, marathon = long distance race,
- fourth column is the place where it happens.

To all who might come, Welcome to Tahiti !

Just kickin' tires

I'm a larger type guy(200+lb) and I want to surf and fish off a oc 1. Haven't done it, but currently I'm doing SUP. Just trying to broaden my horizons. BTW, I'm on Maui.

Paddling Calendar

I think there was talk about the paddling calender somewhere in an earlier thread. So I thought I'd post my findings which I came upon in my never ending quest for knowledge on the World Wide Waste of time. This may not be the most accurate report, but it is what it is...

Since Tahitians have pretty much set the example of preparation, training, and all out paddling madness, here's their schedule.

It seems in Tahiti one man and 6 man season are intermixed so as to allow athletes to train for one season a year. Peaking in October for the Hawaiki Nui and Molokai Hoe. I'm not in favor of one way or another of preparing or scheduling. This is just how the world's best have been doing it.

-Basically there are races every saturday starting in March. The Sat races include V1, V3, and V6.
-April 5th first big V6 race from Punaauia to Moorea to Punaauia.
-May 10th Rangiroa Channel Hoe : Rangiroa to Tikehau, change race like Molokai Hoe
-July 5th Faati Moorea: Tahiti to Moorea to Tahiti. 84 kilometers
-July 12th Te Aito: V1 qualifier for Super Aito
-August 13,14,15: Super Aito V1 race
-Early October Molokai Hoe
-Approx October 29, 30, 31 Hawaiki Nui.

Seems like everyone would have to train on every boat... year round.

must see oc tv

Hey All,

Just saw "Hawaii : Message in the Waves". A great documentary that everyone concerned about protecting our waters and the wildlife in them should see. It presents a great life philosophy on conservation, "Live Like You're in a Canoe"... enjoy the bounty of what is around you but protect what you have as if it's all you've got.

You can download it off the web site if you have a big net connection and can view PAL format videos (this is a BBC special).

This was showing on Animal Planet, but I haven't been able to figure out the schedule via their web site...
