Culture vs Innovation

What if there is an innovation in paddling that inhances a paddlers experience but further distances paddling from its origins? Is this good or bad? Acceptable or rejectable?

Maui - Molokai

What are the logistics for the Starbucks Maui - Molokai outrigger race ?

Is there a container from Oahu to Maui ? How do you get the boat back from Molokai to Oahu ?
Is anybody in charge of this ?

Keahiakahoe race on Sunday

Is anyone participating in the Keahiakahoe Canoe Clubs Con3 Run One-man Race? I am trying to find out how long the courses are (mileage). The long course is from Kailua Beach to Kualoa Beach park and the short course is from He'eia to Kualoa.

Tahiti

Does anybody know how long Tahiti has had organized races? I mean with clubs, associations, officials, etc. We can somewhat trace the early organized Hawaii races to the early 1900s, so did Tahit precede us or catch up?

Looking for a used OC6

Trailers/Logistics for Kaua'i World Challenge Canoes (oc1, oc2. oc6)

2008 Kaua'i World Challenge is right around the corner. YMCA Kaua'i Hoe Wa'a is looking for representative(s) from each island to coordinate trailer/shipping logistics to get canoes to and from the islands before and after the Kaua'i World Challenge. If you know any individuals and/or canoe clubs with a trailer set up for OC1s and OC2s, and think they would be willing to help us coordinate shipping logistics, please have them call Butch Keahiolalo @ 808.635.0388 or email @ keahiolalo@aol.com. We have trucks that will pick up any canoe trailers that are sent to Kaua'i before May 8-11.

We realize many trailers will be going from island to island for Maui to Molokai, Manny's Molokai Solo, Molokai Relay, Kaua'i World Challenge, and Molokai Solo. We are looking at a way to make it easier for everyone involved especially international paddlers and those trying to get their canoes to 3 or 4 races in a row! If you are interested in coordinating a specific trailer, I could post your name and contact info on the Kaua'i World Challenge website and have those interested call you for pricing and logistics, etc. When your trailer is full...it's full. I would recommend some kind of tag/bag system to keep track of those canoes and where they are going. It's a great opportunity for someone or a canoe club to make some extra cash (fundraiser). I know I would pay extra knowing there was going to be a trailer after the Molokai Relay going to Kaua'i. I'm open to any ideas or thoughts that anyone has on this matter. Just trying to make it easier for everyone. Mahalo. Butch Keahiolalo

Race organization/ what can we expect ?

What services can paddlers expect from the race organization ?

How bout a fair race

Why do we pay to race in these events. to me there are several major reasons why I race and more importantly pay to race, but ONE more then ALL is a fair race. Someone who is hosting the race for profit or not has a few responsibilities. the race they put on should be safe, (how is one jet ski for over 100 paddlers suppose to be a safety escort) it should be a good course, organized, and FAIR. Its not that hard to make sure everyone starts at the same time and the same place. Is it? as a race director you either restart the race and make it fair for everyone, (Including the RACE STARTER himself) or you dq the one that started early. no time no standings. yes, that includes the top dogs who would have won it anyways, they need to take some responsibility themselves too. besides they also are trying to organize their own races AND i'm sure that they wouldn't want something like this to happen in their event. otherwise lets all go renagade since it really doesn't matter it won't be how fast you are but how much earlier you can start then everyone else.

Catalina to Redondo....Training Question

I want to paddle my OC-1 from catalina to redondo and I have a few quick questions.

1) Is it correct that catalina to redondo is generally the easier direction to go?? I will need all the help I can get.

2) In terms of training and considering the relative flatness of southern cal during much of the year, can you say that 20 miles of paddling along the coast would confirm a level of fitness to make a run or is it a different animal crossing the channel?

I paddled for a two hour stretch this week without any hydration or gels. I felt pretty good other than my left hip hurting from my "huli phobia" causing me to lean left. I am going to get a camelbalk "flashflo" and rig up a collar to put the bit valve near my mouth and do some hammer gel every 50 mintues and I think (other than my hip) I will be good for 3 hours. Of course for all I know I may be going 4 miles an hour, LOL.

I am not going to go unless I am over prepared so it will be several months but I like to have my goals clear in my head with as many details as I can get.

Thanks for advice!

rudder/drag

Does the distance from the rudder to the stern matter with regards to drag ? Or does it not matter ?

Someone mentioned that the rudder induces turbulent flow,
and
the more forward the rudder, the larger the hull area that would be affected by this turbulence.

Google could not answer this question ! Does anybody know about this effect ?
