training programs

Hi there can anyone help me with developing a year log training program for long distance racing 30 mile+? any help is much appreciated.

molokai safety

some first hand knowledge of my molokai races and safety concerns. my first molokai, right after my escort checked in with me at the 30 min mark they took on a swell and got swamped. i didn't see them for 2 1/2 hours. i saw one other boat in that time and it was too far away to contact. my second molokai my escort hit me and knocked me off my ski. small bump on the head but i was able to continue. my fourth molokai i cramped and pulled out mid channel. immediatly after getting on my escort boat my entire body cramped and i was curled up on the floor of my escort screaming in agony. four years ago after my escort first checked in with me they then lost me. they didn't find me until 2 miles outside of portlock.
if i had tried to pull out 11 seconds later on my 4th molokai i would have drown, for real, no doubt! if anything would have happened durring the many hours i spent alone with my escort looking for me i might have had some serious difficulties as well. if i had been wearing a lifejacket for any of these issues, i would have been safe. if you are under the impression that your escort will be there for you at all times you may end up being dead wrong. be safe and find a comfortable lifejacket and safety equipment. i started paddling with mine last night, a bit of a nipple rash, i'll use vasaline next time.

MOLO SOLO 2009

So its about that time of the year again. Predictions, Premonitions, Pre-race-wishes... Who will be the winner? Are we going to see a new Champion? Or are the Elite just bidding their time to make a grand entrance at our O Biggest C stage 1.

oh yeah any wagers!!!

Shark Tours!!

Ok, it's been a while for me, but I've got something to share....
I recently spoke with someone that is apparently starting a shark tour similar to the one in Haleiwa. But he said that he'll be running it out of portlock and 3 miles off shore into the Kaiwi channel. WOW!

Now, I've heard stories of how the sharks in Haleiwa are already familiar with the sound of the tour boat and how they come following the boat as soon as it comes out of the harbor and follows it to the spot that they drop their cages. I mean, we've seen pictures of how it even attracted a great white!

SO i don't know about anyone else. But I'm not too cool with the thought of having any more sharks than there already are in the kaiwi. Especially when they start getting the sense that people are good food because we tease them from a cage!!

And if you like...here's the dude's email: juansharks@mac.com Let him know how you feel about it. It'll only be a matter of time before a paddler gets bit during one of our races!

What's a Fast Time for 400 Meter Sprint in Oc1?

I was wondering what a fast time is for a 400 meter sprint in an oc1 in flat/relatively calm water.

What's a "fast" time? What's an "average" time?

I know that there are many factors involved - wind, current, boat used, paddle etc. - but I wanted to just get a general frame of reference from all of you.

Thanks!

Ama Question

Is there any reason why the ama should not be parallel to the hull? I was measuring the distance between the two and found that there was about a 1 1/2 difference (bow end further from the hull). Should I be redoing my ama's fittings to make it parallel. It has tabs that hold it in place, so the settings are set unless I do some drilling on the iakos and move the spring tabs.

Kamanu Composites V-1

I was watching the new episode of Ocean Paddler TV on the Tahitian Va'a part. I remember a thread mentioning that the Kamanu boys are making a V-1. There was a rudderless that didn't look Tahitian but had the pueo ama and iakos on that part of the episode. Any insight on this.
