sea creature

The sea was angry that day my friends. The day was March 11, 2008. The place was outside Sprecklesville on the island of Maui. I had been here once before under different circumstances….but that is another story. Departing from my scheduled workout for the day I decided to venture outside beautiful Kahului Harbor to do an out and back course. Starting upwind along the coast and then out around the surf break I finished with the wind back into the Harbor. However, this wasn’t just any usual ho hum OC1 paddling exercise. As I was surfing my majestic pahoa, in mint condition mind you, in some small troughs my pahoa and I came to a soft sudden stop. The hull of the boat was raised off the turbulent ocean into the air. Instinctively I put my paddle over my ama and leaned to the left. The boat and I were then flicked over by an unknown mass from beneath. I wont lie to you friends, I was terrified! I got back into the boat faster than ever before and caught the next immediate bump. Obviously I survived, however, my pahoa needed some counseling following the incident. The culprit is unknown but I am guessing one of the following: Giant squid, killer whale, screaming eel, great white or just some kind of whale.

Chafing!

So this is the most embarrassing questions ever, but I have to ask because I am not sure what to do or if anyone else has been inflicted with this ever persistent irritating problem. I paddle OC1 at least 3-4 times a week. I own a Nai’a Iki. Every time, I go on a long paddle, I get severe derriere chafing. Just like when those marathoners run long runs and get chaffing in between their legs and in their armpits, I get chafing from, I’m assuming, the friction of me moving back and forth as I paddle and the way I sit on my seat. I have always worn spandex or some sort of water friendly shorts. I never have any problems in the OC6. I think it might be the seat as I used to paddle older Nai’a and never had this problem. Anyway, it keeps getting worse and I would really hate to get a staff infection on my butt crack. Sounds funny now, but I am sure it would really suck. Has anyone else encountered this problem?? Any suggestions?

Paddler sponsorships ,works paddlers etc.

Any ideas how are the top paddlers curently sponsored and what do they get from the manufacturers of the boats.

Mothers

Was looking for the video of some guys doing a down wind run from Malibu to mothers beach. cant find it on the archive's or a search
can someone help out. We just did the race last Sat. and it was far from a down wind run. More like a flat dessert crossing. I think the subject read, "Meet my friend Mother's"

kainalu easter challenge

The Kainalu Easter Challenge brought most of the premiere paddlers in the State of Hawaii to Wamainalo to compete in the Tahitian rudderless canoe. The windy conditions and lack of foot pedal navigation had all the competitors laughing and comparing notes as to how to manuever their boats. It was cool to see seasoned guys like Many, Jim Foti, Aaron Napoleon and Mike Judd stimulated by the complexity of the event. Athletes are always looking for their next challenge and Stefan Lambert, the race organizer from Tahiti, brought it to them.

More importantly the event flowed into a festive party at a local beach house. With Tahitian music playing, beers flowing and mahi mahi on the grill, the paddlers and their families enjoyed the rest of the evening together.

hawaii kai to kaimana run

Just wondering if anyone else out there is interested in finding shuttle partners for the Hawaii Kai to Kaimana run. I am available crack-of-dawn Wed-Sat (in the water by 6:45 with good trades) and about any time Sun-Mon-Tue (except race days). Any way we could set up a message board to arrange shuttles? I can carry 2 additional boats (one in saddles, 1 in "v" blocks).

Waterproof Headphones

Been seeing more and more people paddling with their iPods in recent races and was wondering what type of headphones people would reccomend. Some people seem to prefer the ones that wrap around the back of your head but I've also seen a few people with earbud like headphones.

Any advice?

Thanks
