Kauai Hoe Wa'a

Does anyone have the upcoming OC-1 race season schedule for Kauai yet?

Zephyr OC1

Now that a few paddlers own the new Zephyr OC from Outrigger Connection , can anyone here make a few comments on it`s performance and handling ?

SUPER ASSOCIATION

I totally agree with Luke about the Super Association but the only problem is that all we are doing about it is talking and there is no way any one person or group will actually step up to the "leaders" of our associations now and do something about it. HCRA should be the super association but every island has their own rules and nobody wants to change and be as one. It sucks but its the truth. If we have enough support maybe we can make it happen but all we really do now is go along with it and complain along the way. I'm down to do something about it but one voice is not anything in the big picture of things...

Flatwater Competition OC 1

How about flatwater competition for OC1 ?

Many of the recent posts are related to the Tahitian performance in the Molokai Hoe. What's their secret ? How about flatwater endurance ?

In Hawaii it has to be a downwind surfrun to be considered paddling.
I agree with that to a degree: the skill of reading the water correctly is indeed an art, respect to those who have mastered it.
However, where are the sprints ? Surely they are paddling; explosive strength, endurance and good technique are essential to be good in the flat.

Here is a proposal:

OC 1 sprint competition

500 m, 1000 m, 2000 m

A series of qualifiers ending in the state championship.

What do you think ? I can see quite a few arguments in favor.

HOly smokes, none paddling related but worth a lookie. He didn't get hit or hurt but probably had to clean his pants.

What is the root, the archetype for today's OC-1?

My recollection would be the ruddered OC-1s built by Walter Guild, for the Ala Wai flatwater competitions. Remember those events? They were supposed to build a new era in paddling, a revival of the Ala Wai. Back then OC-6 paddlers were cross training on surf-skis, but not even close to the degree that exists today with the modern ocean going OC-1s. And look what happened to the poor Ala Wai...

Paddling / Cultural / Hawaiian / Maori / Polynesien Symbols

Hi Paddlers!

Any who know where to find artwork like that? Awesome would be with explaining the meaning of the symbols!

Please help your German paddling buddy!

For the privileged only?

Im just curious, but how many other people are out there who cant afford to plunk down the $3,000+ for a new canoe? Seems like for every person who has one there are 50+ people who want it but cant afford it. Do the canoes really need to cost so much? Are there alternatives to the outright pruchase? Do any builders offer financing? Just curious.......
