Maui Thanksgiving Day Paddle for the Hungry

I just wanted to congratulate all the Maui folks for coming out on Thanksgiving and showing support for the Maui Food Bank. The beach at Kamaole 1 was colored with all types of watercraft from OC1 &2 to SUP and Prone paddlers, surfskis, OC6, even a couple of swimmers. The best part was hearing Peter announce the food donation amount estimated to be around 2000 pounds. Way to go Maui paddlers and water enthusiasts! Maui No Ka Oi!

Your Ideas on Configuring 45-foot Container to hold 4 to 5 OC-6 Canoes

Fellow paddlers,

Northern California is getting very close to finalizing a shipment of 4 or 5 OC-6 canoes from Honolulu to Oakland in a 45 foot container. I need your thoughts on configuring the container.

In reviewing the many posts on OC-paddler, there are certainly many engineers, nutritionist, or people that have lots of thoughts-or like to tell others what to do. ;))

Obviously with 4 or 5 canoes, we will need to build a second row in the container. The idea is to create the following:

Maui Steering Blade Lost

Hey did anyone happen to find a Steering blade from the Koa Kai Big Boy Challange dropped it in Waimanalo during the race. It has a large red Steinlager sticker on it. Just thought I'd give it a try spoke with someone who had been reunited with his blade through this site. I figured it was just a goners, but we'll see. Mahalo.

Aaloha!

Flying Ama

Got about 2 years in the boat, on & off, and just starting to actually work on flying the ama in situations other than gliding down a wave using right brace to get and keep it in air without rolling over. I'm having a hell of a time keeping it in the air while paddling straight. I can get it pretty light at the catch and sort of "wiggle" it up there during the pull, but soon as I start to recover I either drop it back down or go swimming.

Questions from a Newbie

So today was may maiden voyage on my OC1. For the newbie, is there a forum, publication, video, or whatever out there to set someone like me in the right direction? I went out about 5 miles off shore today and just couldn't get the timing down let alone know which side to paddle on depending on the swell. I had a Sea Otter (male) jump on the back of my rig and later I flipped the boat over going up wind (happened fast-and still can't figure our how it happend).

2010 Makaha Makahiki Canoe Surfing

Does anyone know if the Makahiki is going on in 2010, it usually goes around February

kinda far?

I was surfing the net and came across the HIPA web site ( Big Island ) and noticed that there Championship race is going to be from Kona to Honaunau. Will that be the same course as the Queen Lili?uokalni race? I know that it took nearly 2 hours for the first canoe to cross in a 6man in typical Kona flat conditions, but to do it in a one man is nuts.

First time soloist...

Help! I am preparing to do the Pa'a Solo next April, it will be my first channel crossing as well as my first big solo race. I was wondering if some of the more experienced paddlers and/or coaches here could enlighten me or any other first timers? If there is another string on the forum that addresses this, could somebody please link it? Perhaps we could even get a post listed as an article?

Ideal training time line?
1 year, 6 months, 4 months? What would be a good estimate for most paddlers to properly prepare?

Distance training progression?

Paddling Workouts Questions!!!!!! ****

What are some of you all doing in the water on your runs to train for races?
What kind of sprints?
Do you do any sprint sets or time drills?
How long is your runs and how many times a week?
Question about bums I sprint and get them and connect them but it takes a lot of work and focus. And then sometimes I look over and say "oh look over there, some sick bumps to go and connect." I then go try them out. How far and how fast to you go outside or inside of where you want to run for that day? And how much do you sprint for SMALL bumps. Big ones are guarantee.
